Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Centre
On January 1, 2007, the hospital established the Endoscopic Diagnosis and Treatment Department by merging the gastroenterology gastroscopy unit with thoracic surgery’s bronchoscopy and pulmonary function units. Zhang Xiaojuan was director; the department was on the east side of the fourth floor of the former outpatient building and had two physicians, three nurses and one technician. Li Shengxi became director in February 2010. In January 2015 it moved to the fourth floor of the new outpatient building and was renamed the Digestive Endoscopy Center. On December 31, 2018 it had ten physicians and eight nurses. Professor Xu Meidong of Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, was appointed visiting professor and regularly provided technical guidance. The hospital describes endoscopic intestinal obstruction catheter placement as a specialty and lists ERCP, endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), digestive tract stenting, peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM), ligation and sclerosis of esophageal varices caused by cirrhosis and tissue-glue treatment of gastric fundal varices among techniques at an advanced provincial level.
Under director Li Shengxi, the center combined visiting expertise and outside training. Professor Xu Meidong regularly advised and operated on difficult cases, while medical and nursing staff pursued training in China and abroad. The hospital reports improved diagnostic and treatment capacity and introduction of techniques previously unavailable there.
