Gastroenterology
I. Department Introduction
The Department of Gastroenterology of Liaoning Provincial People’s Hospital consists of Gastroenterology Department I and Gastroenterology Department II. The Department of Gastroenterology is a provincial clinical key specialty in Liaoning Province. Established in 1978, it is a National Standardized Diagnosis and Treatment Center for Fatty Liver Disease, has joined the Liaoning Province Alliance for Standardized Diagnosis and Treatment of Esophageal Diseases, participates in the hospital’s multidisciplinary team (MDT) for gastroesophageal reflux disease, and operates a specialty outpatient clinic for gastroesophageal reflux disease. It has contributed to clinical care, teaching, scientific research, and hospital development. The department’s physicians have repeatedly undertaken further training and study at renowned medical institutions in China and abroad. It currently has 3 staff members with doctoral degrees, 18 staff members with senior professional titles, and 1 master’s supervisor. It has also appointed 1 visiting professor from the Endoscopy Center of Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated with Fudan University to provide technical support.
Department Overview
Gastroenterology Department I: It can independently diagnose and treat critical conditions such as severe acute pancreatitis, acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding, and liver failure. It has also actively carried out abdominal angiography, embolization therapy for liver cancer, transcatheter superselective hepatic arterial embolization for liver cancer, preoperative, postoperative, and palliative transarterial regional infusion chemotherapy for gastrointestinal tumors, arterial injection therapy for ulcerative colitis, and ultrasound-guided aspiration and catheter drainage of hepatic cysts or liver abscesses. In recent years, endoscopic techniques have continued to advance, and the department has comprehensively implemented ERCP, EMR, ESD, POEM, gastrointestinal metal stent implantation, dilation of benign and malignant gastrointestinal strictures, ligation and sclerotherapy of gastroesophageal varices, tissue glue therapy, intestinal obstruction catheter placement, endoscopic ultrasound-guided puncture and drainage, small-bowel endoscopy, and other procedures. Several techniques have filled gaps within the province and reached domestically leading levels. The department has received the hospital’s awards for advanced technologies on multiple occasions, undertaken provincial, municipal, and international cooperative projects several times, and received Second and Third Prizes for Scientific and Technological Progress at the provincial level. Department members have served as chief editors or contributing editors of 4 monographs, published more than 100 papers in core journals and national-level journals, and published 10 SCI articles.
Gastroenterology Department II: It currently has 25 medical and nursing staff, including 7 chief physicians and 5 charge nurses, of whom 6 hold master’s degrees. The outpatient internal medicine consultation area has separate specialist and general consultation rooms. The ward has 39 beds and an intensive care unit. In cooperation with the Endoscopy Center and other departments, it carries out diagnostic and treatment procedures including electrocautery resection of gastrointestinal polyps, endoscopic dissection of gastrointestinal submucosal tumors, lithotripsy for gastric bezoars, endoscopic hemostatic treatment for gastrointestinal bleeding, esophageal variceal ligation, sclerotherapy, endoscopic common bile duct stone extraction, stent placement for esophageal and bile duct strictures, ultrasound-guided treatment of hepatic cysts and liver abscesses, endoscopic treatment of achalasia of the cardia, ECT, and Helicobacter pylori testing. Several specialty techniques have reached domestically advanced levels. The department has held provincial continuing-education courses for 10 consecutive years, accepted visiting trainees and standardized resident trainees, assigned physicians to provide paired assistance, and organized free medical consultations and health lectures.
