Otolaryngology
I. Department Introduction
The Department of Otolaryngology of Liaoning Provincial People’s Hospital is a provincial key academic specialty distinguished by its professional treatment of ear, nose, throat, and laryngeal diseases. It is an affiliated teaching hospital of Dalian Medical University, a national and provincial resident physician training base, and the Liaoning Provincial Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Deafness. It undertakes projects under the Liaoning Medical Peak Project. The department currently has 24 medical and nursing staff members, including 5 chief physicians; 10 staff members hold master’s or doctoral degrees and the professional title of associate chief physician or above. There are 13 nursing staff members, including 2 supervisory nurses, and 10 have a bachelor’s degree or above.
II. Department Specialty Technologies
1. Nasal endoscopic surgery: This is the most advanced minimally invasive technology internationally used to treat nasal and paranasal sinus diseases. In 1989, the department was the first in the province to introduce and implement this technology. Using American Stryker nasal endoscopes, it has successfully treated chronic rhinitis, sinusitis, nasal polyps, and benign and malignant tumors of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. The department performs these operations under local or general anesthesia. Because of advantages including no facial incision, less bleeding, and a shorter hospital stay, it is hailed as “the revolution in rhinology.”
2. Low-temperature plasma technology for the treatment of snoring disorders: Snoring disorders are increasingly recognized as a major culprit in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. In 2007, the department introduced the American Jieshi low-temperature plasma surgical system and began performing low-temperature radiofrequency plasma ablation for patients with multilevel obstruction of the nose, nasopharynx, oropharynx, larynx, and tongue base. Combined with traditional surgery, individualized surgical plans are developed to achieve precise treatment. Its surgical features include simplifying the operation of multilevel surgery and improving surgical safety. This minimally invasive technology offers advantages including a short operating time, a clear surgical field, less bleeding, less tissue damage, mild pain, and rapid postoperative recovery.
3. Voice surgery technology: Using German (WOLF) electronic laryngoscopes and German STORZ video microscopic suspension laryngoscopes, the department has successfully carried out voice surgery microflap procedures to treat vocal fold nodules, vocal fold polyps, cysts, and benign and malignant laryngeal tumors; vocal fold filling procedures to treat glottic insufficiency; and glottic enlargement surgery to treat bilateral vocal fold paralysis. Its advantages are visualization, precision, and minimal invasiveness. After surgery, professionals provide guidance on correct voice use and voice rehabilitation training.
4. Ear microsurgery technology: German Zeiss otologic microscopes and otoendoscopes are used to accurately diagnose various types of chronic otitis media and tympanic membrane perforation. Ear microsurgical techniques are used to successfully perform tympanoplasty, together with hearing reconstruction surgery.
5. Precise treatment of sudden deafness, sensorineural tinnitus, and vertigo: The department is the Liaoning Provincial Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Deafness. It conducts newborn hearing screening and uses medication, hyperbaric oxygen, hearing rehabilitation, and otolith repositioning, among other measures, to successfully cure thousands of patients with sudden deafness, sensorineural tinnitus, and vertigo. It also provides guidance on hearing-aid selection and fitting for patients with severe sensorineural hearing loss.
