Radiotherapy
Radiotherapy at Inner Mongolia Medical University Affiliated Hospital began in 1979. In 1992, the radiotherapy specialty separated from the Department of Oncology, and the Department of Radiation Oncology was established to specialize in tumor radiotherapy. The department currently has two wards with a total of 98 beds and admits more than 1,200 tumor patients annually. The Department of Radiation Oncology of Inner Mongolia Medical University Affiliated Hospital is a key clinical medical discipline of the autonomous region. The Department of Radiation Oncology consists of five parts: the radiotherapy inpatient wards, the radiotherapy outpatient clinic, the radiotherapy machine outpatient clinic, the Body Gamma Knife Center, and the Head Gamma Knife Center. The professional groups include five groups of technical personnel, including the physician group, nursing group, physics group, and technology group. Our Department of Radiation Oncology has strong technical capabilities and undertakes medical care, teaching, technical guidance, personnel training, scientific and technological research, standardized residency training in radiation oncology in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, radiotherapy quality control, and other tasks related to radiotherapy in Inner Mongolia. The Department of Radiation Oncology has a high-quality team composed of senior experts and highly educated professionals, with complete staffing in all technical categories. The department currently has 65 staff members: 21 physicians, 6 physicists, 1 engineer, 16 technologists, and 21 nurses. Among them, 8 have senior professional titles, 7 have associate-senior professional titles, 13 have intermediate professional titles, and 37 have junior professional titles. Four have doctoral degrees, 18 have master’s degrees, 31 have bachelor’s degrees, and 10 have junior-college degrees. The main equipment includes: 3 linear accelerators, namely Siemens Primus-M, Primus-E, and Varian Trilogy; 1 Tomotherapy helical radiotherapy machine; 2 Gamma Knife treatment systems (Head Gamma Knife and Whole-Body Gamma Knife); 1 X-Knife treatment system; 1 three-dimensional afterloading brachytherapy machine; 1 radioactive particle implantation system (planning system and verification system); 4 hyperthermia machines; 1 deep X-ray therapy machine; 1 GE Lightspeed RT16 large-bore CT simulator and 1 digital X-ray simulator; 6 three-dimensional treatment planning systems (TPS); 2 two-dimensional ionization-chamber array morning-check instruments, 3 three-dimensional radiotherapy verification systems, 1 three-dimensional water phantom and related software; and 1 set of mold-room equipment, solid-water phantoms, and other auxiliary treatment equipment. Scope of Services The main radiotherapy techniques performed include: adaptive radiotherapy (ART), dose-guided radiotherapy (DGRT), image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), three-dimensional conformal intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT), Head Gamma Knife treatment, Body Gamma Knife treatment, Head X-Knife treatment, three-dimensional brachytherapy, radioactive particle implantation therapy, electron-beam radiotherapy, deep X-ray radiotherapy, concurrent chemoradiotherapy, and deep and superficial hyperthermia for tumors. At present, it is the only radiotherapy center in the autonomous region capable of performing all radiotherapy techniques. Since 1995, the Department of Radiation Oncology of Inner Mongolia Medical University Affiliated Hospital has taken the lead in undertaking teaching in radiation oncology and has made active contributions to training radiotherapy professionals in our region. It has trained more than 4,000 outstanding undergraduate graduates and more than 20 master’s students, including 3 doctoral students currently enrolled and 5 persons who have obtained doctoral degrees. At present, 10 master’s students are enrolled. The scientific research projects of the Department of Radiation Oncology of Inner Mongolia Medical University Affiliated Hospital that have received approval include 1 National Natural Science Foundation of China project, 12 autonomous-region-level scientific research projects, 10 department- or bureau-level projects, and 5 hospital-level projects. Eight projects have been completed. The department has received 2 second prizes and 2 third prizes of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Science and Technology Progress Award; 2 second prizes and 2 third prizes of the Medical Science and Technology Award of the Inner Mongolia Medical Association; 1 second prize for an outstanding paper at the 2006 Inner Mongolia Youth Science and Technology Forum; and 9 New Technology and New Service Awards of the Affiliated Hospital of Inner Mongolia Medical College. It has organized 9 national and autonomous-region-level academic conferences. The Department of Radiation Oncology of Inner Mongolia Medical University Affiliated Hospital has published more than 160 professional papers at various levels, including 8 papers in Chinese Medical Association series journals, 103 papers in national-level core journals, 49 provincial- or ministerial-level papers, and 9 SCI papers, among others. Its personnel have participated 25 times in international conferences and 98 times in national-level professional academic conferences, where they presented 34 papers. The academic leader has served as a member of the sixth, seventh, and eighth committees of the Radiation Oncology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association; a member of the first, second, and third committees of the Radiation Therapy Professional Committee of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association; a member of the third, fourth, and fifth committees of the Tumor Marker Professional Committee of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association; the first standing council member of the China Western Cancer Treatment Cooperation Group; chairperson of the first, second, and third committees of the Radiation Oncology Branch of the Inner Mongolia Medical Association (Physicians Association); and vice-chairperson of the third and fourth committees and a standing committee member of the fifth committee of the Oncology Branch of the Inner Mongolia Medical Association. The academic leader has also served as a member of the expert groups of the Medical Accident Appraisal Committees of the Chinese Medical Association, the Inner Mongolia Medical Association, and the Hohhot Medical Association, and as a member of the First Senior-Cadre Health Care Committee of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The academic leader has also served as an invited editorial board member of JOURNAL OF TUMOR MARKER ONCOLOGY, an editorial board member of the Chinese Journal of Radiation Oncology, an editorial board member of Chinese Clinical Oncology, an executive editorial board member of the Inner Mongolia Medical Journal, and an editorial board member of the Journal of Inner Mongolia Medical College. In addition, 5 other people serve as members of various academic organizations. Eighteen people participated in the compilation and translation of the textbooks and works Modern Clinical Diagnosis and Treatment Techniques, Radiation Oncology, Newly Compiled Radiation Therapy, Clinical Comparative Imaging, and Principles and Practice of Radiation Oncology. They served as chief editors of Lectures in Radiation Oncology, Diagnostic and Treatment Norms and Implementation Plans for Common Malignant Tumors in Inner Mongolia, and Conformal and Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy for Tumors. Department-Specific Medical Technologies The department’s current specialty medical technologies include: three-dimensional conformal intensity-modulated radiotherapy, image-guided radiotherapy, dose-guided radiotherapy, adaptive radiotherapy, helical tomotherapy, particularly total-brain and total-spinal-cord radiotherapy and total-bone-marrow radiotherapy, radioactive particle implantation therapy, three-dimensional brachytherapy, stereotactic radiation (surgical) therapy (X-Knife and Gamma Knife), concurrent chemoradiotherapy, and deep hyperthermia for tumors.
