Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine
Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital's Department of Radiology is equipped with advanced technology and possesses a range of imaging diagnostic and therapeutic instruments manufactured by Siemens (Germany), General Electric (United States), Philips (Netherlands), Canon (Japan), United Imaging (China), and Mindray (China), including cutting-edge medical equipment such as latest-generation high-field MRI systems, CT scanners, and angiography systems. The Department of Radiology is distributed across the Qingchun, Qiantang, Grand Canal, Shaoxing, and Shuangling campuses and operates under integrated management. It currently provides a full range of X-ray radiography, gastrointestinal contrast examinations, MRI, CT, and angiography examinations. It also performs various interventional diagnostic and therapeutic techniques, principally neurointervention, peripheral vascular intervention, and oncologic intervention. It has large-scale interventional wards at the Qingchun and Qiantang campuses. The Department of Radiology has a complete and comprehensive PACS solution, enabling a paperless, filmless, rapid, and convenient image-transfer workflow and providing patients at large with comprehensive imaging diagnostic and therapeutic services.
The Department of Radiology has a wealth of talent, currently including 26 professional and technical staff with senior professional titles and 26 holders of doctoral degrees in medicine. Department Chair Professor Hu Hongjie is a national committee member of the Cardiothoracic Group of the Radiology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, Vice Chair of the Radiology Branch of the Zhejiang Medical Association, and President of the Radiologists Branch of the Zhejiang Medical Doctor Association. Former Department Chair Professor Zhang Shizheng is a renowned Chinese expert in imaging diagnosis and interventional radiology; he previously served as a Standing Committee member of the Radiology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, Head of its Abdominal Group, and Chair of the Radiology Branch of the Zhejiang Medical Association. Deputy Department Directors Chief Physicians Deng Liping, Sun Jihong, and Zheng Weiliang, Associate Chief Physician Zhang Qiaowei, and Chief Technician Ren Hong are Standing Committee members or committee members of the Radiology Branch of the Zhejiang Medical Association, standing committee members of its Interventional Branch, a committee member of the Radiologists Branch of the Zhejiang Medical Doctor Association, and a Vice Chair of its Imaging Technology Branch.
In addition to its medical work, the Department of Radiology also undertakes research and teaching. It leads numerous research projects, including projects of the National Natural Science Foundation, the Outstanding Young Scientist Project of the Zhejiang Provincial Natural Science Foundation, and key projects, major special projects, and the Qianjiang Talent program of the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Science and Technology. It has successively trained postdoctoral fellows, doctoral students, master's students, undergraduates, and other personnel at different levels, and undertakes the training of resident physicians, advanced trainees, and interns.
The Department of Radiology is currently aligned with Europe, the United States, Japan, and other countries and regions. It was the first in Zhejiang Province to implement a subspecialty model and has five subspecialties: neuroimaging, musculoskeletal imaging, cardiothoracic imaging, abdominal imaging, and interventional diagnosis and treatment. Each imaging subspecialty has a strong team of physicians. With advanced equipment and consistent dedication, we will provide first-class services wholeheartedly to patients at large.
Technical Advantages
The Department of Radiology was among the earliest departments in Zhejiang Province to establish an outpatient clinic and inpatient ward for interventional treatment. Over the past 30 years, the team has accumulated extensive clinical experience in minimally invasive intervention and pioneered the independent performance of numerous procedures in the province. It is one of Zhejiang Province's minimally invasive interventional treatment departments with the most advanced equipment and greatest influence, and pursues excellence and continuous innovation in neurointervention, oncologic intervention, hepatobiliary intervention, peripheral intervention, and reproductive intervention. Today, it has large-scale interventional wards at both the Qingchun and Qiantang campuses, while also extending services to our Grand Canal and Shaoxing campuses, achieving full coverage of interventional treatment across four campuses. At the same time, the Department of Radiology's Minimally Invasive Intervention Group regularly travels to Xinjiang to provide paired assistance for the development of the Minimally Invasive Intervention Group at our affiliated Alar Hospital, benefiting the people of Xinjiang.
In 2023, through the joint efforts of multiple specialists from multiple disciplines, Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital successfully completed China's first interventional procedure for the precision treatment of liver cancer using yttrium[90Y] microsphere injection administered by catheterization through distal radial artery access. The successful implementation of the procedure means that Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital now has another “nuclear weapon” in the treatment of liver cancer, and also demonstrates the leading role of the Department of Radiology's Minimally Invasive Intervention Group in the field of interventional treatment in Zhejiang Province and even the Yangtze River Delta region.
As one of the malignant tumors with a relatively high case-fatality rate in China, liver cancer has occult early symptoms and the characteristics of “high recurrence and easy metastasis.” The interventional procedure using yttrium[90Y]microsphere injection is the most advanced interventional treatment technology in the world and is also an innovative treatment approach in China. It can not only treat tumors but also enable conversion to surgical treatment. Like a precisely guided “miniature nuclear bomb,” it enters the patient's hepatic vessels through precise positioning and releases high-energy β-rays to instantly destroy tumor cells at close range, while having almost no effect on normal liver tissue and the surrounding environment.
In April 2023, the Capacity Building and Continuing Education Center of the National Health Commission announced the list of the first batch nationwide of peripheral vascular interventional construction centers and tumor minimally invasive interventional construction centers. Zhejiang University School of Medicine's Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital was successfully selected, becoming the only institution in Zhejiang Province selected for the development of the “dual centers.” The successful selection for these “dual centers” would not have been possible without the strong support of the Department of Radiology's Minimally Invasive Intervention Group.
In the field of peripheral vascular intervention, the department routinely performs interventional treatments such as peripheral vascular stenosis stent implantation, aneurysm embolization, inferior vena cava filter placement, and treatment of uterine fibroids, benign prostatic hyperplasia, pelvic congestion syndrome, and postpartum hemorrhage. In minimally invasive interventional treatment of tumors, liver cancer/lung cancer intervention techniques, including TIPS, endovascular tumor therapy (such as yttrium[90Y]), ablative therapy, and radioactive seed implantation for tumors, are all routinely performed. Distinctive techniques include transradial intervention, cryotherapy, and puncture robots. More than 1000 liver cancer/lung cancer-related interventional procedures are performed annually. In addition, the Department of Radiology's Minimally Invasive Intervention Group routinely performs neurointerventional treatments such as intracranial aneurysm embolization, intracranial arterial stent placement, and emergency thrombectomy, as well as interventional treatments for all organ systems throughout the body.
