Transfusion Medicine

Since its establishment in 1999, the Department of Blood Transfusion of Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, has consistently upheld the理念 of “providing safe blood for clinical treatment” and focused on blood group transfusion. Relying on the Zhejiang Provincial standardized training base for blood transfusion practitioners and the Zhejiang Provincial Advanced Transfusion Therapy Center, the department has pursued intensive and meticulous work and forged ahead, becoming a model department for transfusion medicine and an industry leader throughout the province. The department strives for excellence in specialized technologies including difficult blood group testing, antibody identification, genotyping, transplant matching, and apheresis therapy; adheres to practical work; strengthens blood group-compatible transfusion and closed-loop management; achieves precise and safe transfusion; and has established a comprehensive quality control system. It has obtained ISO15189 accreditation from the China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment (CNAS), ensuring the quality and safety of blood used clinically. The Department of Blood Transfusion comprises multiple subspecialty teams, including the transfusion clinic, blood group serology, quality management, apheresis therapy, transplant matching, hemolytic disease of the newborn, and transfusion testing. Each team is led by experienced professionals, ensuring the professionalism and efficiency of all services. At present, there are a total of 31 physicians and medical technologists, including 5 with senior professional titles, 5 licensed physicians, and 3 doctors; 62% hold doctoral or master's degrees. There are currently 14 nursing staff members. The academic echelon of the team is well structured and technically strong. With professional expertise, a rigorous attitude, and high-quality services, it plays a key role in ensuring the safety of clinical transfusion.

Technical Advantages

Routine transfusion therapy: Each year, the department administers 2.1万 units of red blood cells, 500万 mL of plasma, 5万个 units of platelets, and 1万 units of cryoprecipitate. Each year, it conducts 600 cases of difficult blood group identification, 30 cases of subtype identification, 350 cases of irregular antibody identification, and 250 difficult crossmatching specimens.

Blood group genotyping and transplant matching: Each year, the department conducts 100 cases of ABO blood group genotyping, 150 cases of HLA genotyping, and 150 cases of PRA testing. The Qiantang Campus conducts screening for hemolytic disease of the newborn, testing 260 cases of hemolytic disease of the newborn each year.

The number of patients receiving apheresis therapy is approximately 1000 cases. Therapeutic blood component apheresis technology is applied to patients scheduled for routine elective surgery, as well as patients with pancreatitis, psoriasis, systemic lupus erythematosus, severe influenza A, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, drug-induced hemolytic anemia, rhabdomyolysis, hemolytic uremic syndrome, autoimmune encephalitis, neuromyelitis optica, and Guillain-Barré syndrome.

Application of platelet-rich plasma therapy technology: Platelet-rich plasma therapy technology is applied in orthopedics, wound care, plastic and cosmetic surgery, reproductive medicine, and other fields.

Academic Status

The Department of Blood Transfusion of Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital is a joint reference laboratory for blood group genetic testing of the National Center for Clinical Laboratory of the Ministry of Health.

Research Achievements

Over the past 5 years, the department has served as principal investigator for 1 National Natural Science Foundation of China General Program project, 1 National Natural Science Foundation of China Young Scientists Fund project, 1 ministry-province co-funded project, and 3 Zhejiang Provincial Natural Science Foundation projects; it has published more than 50 high-quality papers, including more than 30 indexed by SCI, with the highest impact factor reaching 11.2.
