Severe Acute Pancreatitis and Complex Intra-abdominal Infection Multidisciplinary Clinic
Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine
Introduction
To facilitate the initial diagnosis and subsequent consolidating treatment of patients with severe acute pancreatitis and complicated intra-abdominal infections, experts from the Department of Critical Care Medicine, together with specialists from General Surgery, Gastroenterology and the Nursing Department, have jointly established the Joint Clinic for Severe Acute Pancreatitis and Complicated Intra-abdominal Infections, providing professional evaluation and treatment recommendations for the overall management of these conditions. Severe acute pancreatitis is a critical, rapidly progressive illness with a perilous prognosis, a prolonged course, and high costs; its mortality rate can reach 36%–50%, making it a major clinical challenge. Since the establishment of our Severe Acute Pancreatitis Treatment Center in 2016, patients have been managed through a multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach, achieving excellent outcomes for patients with severe acute pancreatitis and complicated intra-abdominal infections and substantially reducing mortality — from 31.8% in 2009 to 3.53% in 2018 — a level of achievement at the forefront of China, and it has become a signature program of Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital with considerable influence nationwide.
