Colorectal Surgery
Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine
The Department of Colorectal and Anorectal Surgery at Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, was established in 2004 and is a key colorectal and anorectal specialty in Zhejiang Province integrating clinical care, teaching, and research. It is also a doctoral degree-granting program of Zhejiang University, focusing on the precision diagnosis and treatment of colorectal and anal diseases.
Under the leadership of Director Huang Xuefeng, the department has a prominent academic leadership role. It is the chair institution of the Professional Committee of Anorectal Diseases of the Zhejiang Society of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine and the chair institution of the Special Committee on Colorectal Tumors of the Zhejiang Medical Doctors Association.
The department has achieved homogeneous, integrated management across its four major hospital campuses—Qingchun, Qiantang, Grand Canal, and Shaoxing—with an average of nearly 10,000 surgical procedures annually. It has a well-developed clinical talent structure and currently has 43 clinical physicians, including 9 professors/chief physicians and 10 associate professors/deputy chief physicians, as well as 2 doctoral supervisors and 3 master’s supervisors.
Technical Advantages
The department adheres to the core philosophy of “minimally invasive, painless, and enhanced recovery (ERAS)” and has established a full-process care system covering screening, diagnosis and treatment, surgery, rehabilitation, and follow-up for anorectal diseases. It routinely provides standardized diagnosis and treatment for colorectal tumors, hemorrhoids, anal fistulas, anal fissures, rectal prolapse, refractory constipation, rectovaginal fistulas, presacral tumors, inflammatory bowel disease, and other diseases. It specializes in individualized precision treatment for difficult and severe conditions such as sphincter-preserving treatment of low rectal cancer, complex anorectal and pelvic-floor diseases, and advanced colorectal tumors.
The department is a benchmark center for minimally invasive colorectal surgery in the province, with outstanding minimally invasive expertise; minimally invasive procedures account for more than 90% of all operations, ranking among the highest in the province. As one of the earliest departments in the province to perform robotic laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer and a department with a leading surgical volume, it has advanced expertise in functional preservation for low rectal cancer, sphincter-preserving treatment, and the use of Cai stents to avoid intestinal stomas, effectively improving patients’ postoperative quality of life.
In the field of benign anal diseases, the department has developed particular expertise in the precision diagnosis and treatment of complex anal fistulas and various pelvic-floor diseases. For complex anal fistulas, including high and recurrent fistulas, as well as rectovaginal fistulas, it uses individualized minimally invasive curative procedures to effectively reduce postoperative recurrence and preserve normal anal function. It routinely performs minimally invasive, painless procedures for all types of hemorrhoidal disease, providing the advantages of minimal trauma, less discomfort, and rapid recovery. For difficult pelvic-floor conditions such as pelvic-floor dysfunction, rectal prolapse, fecal incontinence, and refractory constipation, it has established an integrated management system comprising specialized assessment, precision intervention, functional restoration, and long-term rehabilitation follow-up, enabling precise control of chronic disease throughout the entire course.
The department is one of the earliest units in the province to carry out multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment of colorectal tumors (CRC-MDT) and has incorporated the MDT model into its routine diagnosis and treatment protocols for colorectal cancer. By integrating high-quality multidisciplinary resources from oncology, gastroenterology, imaging, pathology, radiotherapy, interventional medicine, and other fields, it develops standardized, individualized comprehensive diagnosis and treatment plans for patients with tumors, substantially improving treatment outcomes and long-term prognosis in difficult and advanced colorectal tumors.
