Head and Neck Surgery
Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine
The Department of Head and Neck Surgery at Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine was founded in 1995 by Professor Gao Li. The hospital describes it as the only thyroid disease diagnosis and treatment technical guidance center in Zhejiang designated by the provincial health authority. It has 35 physicians, all with doctoral or master's degrees, including four chief and six associate chief physicians. It has 60 approved beds, more than 110,000 outpatient visits and approximately 5,000 or more thyroid malignancy operations annually; the hospital reports that its workload has ranked among the province's highest for several consecutive years. The current department director is Dr Xie Lei.
The department reports pioneering in China and routinely performing small-incision lateral neck dissection, upper mediastinal dissection through a neck incision and parapharyngeal lymph node dissection, avoiding large neck appearance changes and conventional thoracotomy. It routinely performs endoscopic thyroid surgery via oral, axillary and clavicular approaches and operates on recurrent and advanced thyroid cancer. For in-situ parathyroid preservation it proposed the thymus–vascular–inferior parathyroid plane; the hospital reports a significant reduction in postoperative hypoparathyroidism and interest from peers in China and abroad. It combines preoperative ultrasound, ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration and a 116-gene thyroid cancer test for detailed preoperative assessment. It also routinely performs endoscope-assisted oral and maxillofacial tumor surgery and reduction and internal fixation of maxillofacial fractures after trauma.
The department provides clinical stomatology teaching for the Third Clinical College of Zhejiang University School of Medicine and is a standardized residency training base. Each year it guides dozens of visiting physicians from Chinese provinces and regions through dozens of endoscope-assisted thyroid operations.
Its reported research includes seven provincial or ministerial projects, including one Zhejiang key research and development project, RMB 2.5 million in allocated project funding and RMB 2.67 million in total research support, several SCI-indexed papers and one expert consensus.
