Emergency Department
Shuguang Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine
The emergency department of Shuguang Hospital, including critical care medicine, is an early clinical department and a Shanghai key specialty combining care, teaching and research. In the 1980s it led a national traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) collaboration on collapse syndromes, helped establish diagnostic and treatment standards and participated in a national research program. Professor Wang Zuo developed an approach described as supporting vital energy and eliminating pathogenic factors and developed Shenfuqing injection, which received a Ministry of Health award. A TCM emergency center and ICU were established in 1991, a Shanghai collaboration involving 18 municipal hospitals in 2002, and a TCM emergency development base in 2006. Subsequent national and Shanghai specialty projects led to approval in 2021 as a national TCM epidemic prevention and treatment base, member of a national emergency rescue alliance and regional TCM emergency and critical care center. The department links infectious disease, emergency and critical care from fever clinic through emergency care, wards and ICU. It has 69 beds, including 26 ICU beds, four chief and 11 associate chief physicians. The hospital reports participation in influenza and COVID-19 prevention and control and related honors. It treats severe pneumonia, respiratory failure, severe pancreatitis, sepsis, multiorgan failure, heatstroke, heart failure, poisoning and other emergencies. Techniques include bedside critical-care ultrasound, flexible bronchoscopy, bedside hemofiltration, ventilation, hemodynamic monitoring and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). The department has received education ministry and Shanghai science and technology awards.
