The Department of Thoracic Surgery of Shuguang Hospital Affiliated with Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine is a key discipline under development in Shanghai and a nationally authorized site for conferring master's degrees. It has a team of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery professionals with a strong sense of commitment and excellent development potential.

At present, the department is capable of providing high-level surgical treatment for common cardiothoracic diseases. In recent years, closely following the international academic frontier, the department has actively carried out minimally invasive surgical treatment for thoracic and cardiac diseases, including thoracoscopic lobectomy or segmentectomy (various types of pulmonary ground-glass nodules and lung cancer), mediastinal tumor resection, esophagectomy (for esophageal cancer or benign esophageal lesions), treatment of palmar hyperhidrosis, pulmonary bullae, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and pectus excavatum, as well as treatment of various benign and malignant diseases; bronchoscopic interventional treatment of respiratory diseases; and surgical treatment of difficult and complex conditions, including chemical burns of the esophagus (colonic interposition for esophageal replacement), tracheal tumors, resection of giant chest wall tumors, hyperthermic intrathoracic perfusion chemotherapy for advanced malignant pleural effusion, and so on. Integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine treatment of various thoracic diseases is also a distinctive diagnostic and therapeutic feature of the department.

At the same time, the department also widely performs various types of cardiac surgery, such as cardiac valve replacement (repair), coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG—including procedures with and without cardiac arrest), and surgery for congenital heart disease; in addition, our department has extensive clinical experience in the interventional treatment of diseases of the great thoracic and abdominal vessels and peripheral vascular diseases.

The cardiothoracic surgery department is excellently equipped and has an independent, fully enclosed, modern, specialized intensive care unit. It is equipped with multiple Aesculap high-definition thoracoscopes, an ultrasonic scalpel, Ligasure, an esophageal pressure monitor, an endobronchial ultrasound bronchoscope (EBUS), and various other high-end medical instruments and equipment, as well as an internationally advanced, full-function, around-the-clock monitoring system for the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
