Ultrasound Imaging Department
Ultrasound examinations belonged to the functional examination department from 1985; the Ultrasound Imaging Department became independent in 2008. It has won first place in Shenzhen's non-nursing quality-control circle competition and awards in Guangdong Medical Association case competitions, as well as hospital awards for outstanding teams, professional conduct, quality control and refined management. It collaborates in national multicenter studies on musculoskeletal ultrasound artificial intelligence, fatty liver and liver fibrosis and belongs to a national ultrasound quality-control sentinel network, the Greater Bay Area ultrasound alliance and the Southern ultrasound medical consortium. Professors Chen Yun and Hu Pingxiang previously served as administrative directors; chief physician Li Hong has led the department since 2025. Services and research include 3D ultrasound, elastography, contrast-enhanced, intracavitary and musculoskeletal ultrasound, ultrasound-guided puncture and ablation; combined heart–lung ultrasound, cardiac strain, contrast-enhanced diagnosis and treatment, ultrasound assessment of chronic liver and kidney disease, elastography of thyroid and breast, contrast imaging of organs and masses, and intracavitary imaging. Across three campuses the team has 45 medical and nursing staff and one master's supervisor, reporting 558,000 examinations or visits annually. Clinical services cover routine and transesophageal echocardiography and right/left heart contrast studies; abdominal liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen and kidney ultrasound; superficial thyroid, breast and soft-tissue imaging; peripheral vascular imaging; musculoskeletal examination and guided intervention of muscle, tendon, ligament, joint and nerve lesions; transrectal, transvaginal and 360-degree anal canal ultrasound; breast and liver elastography; contrast ultrasound to distinguish benign and malignant lesions and diagnose vascular stenosis, embolism and aneurysm; guided liver/kidney biopsy, cyst sclerotherapy and tumor ablation; fetal screening during early, middle and late pregnancy; and 3D imaging of breast, fetus and uterus. The department has undertaken more than ten Guangdong and Shenzhen medical research projects, including a Shenzhen key project on liver shear-wave velocity and pathology grading in chronic hepatitis B carriers; four commissioned projects and six completed GCP projects. It reports nearly 80 academic papers, over ten indexed in SCI. Staff attend and teach at national, provincial and municipal ultrasound meetings, train internationally, host Shenzhen's ultrasound annual meeting and receive overseas experts. Professor Hu Pingxiang became president of the Shenzhen Society of Ultrasound Medical Engineering in 2022; the society now has six specialist committees.
