【Department Establishment History】 The Department of Pathology was established in 2008; it was formerly the Pathology Room. 【Department Honors】 This specialty is the deputy-leading unit of the Breast Oncology Group of the Oncology Pathology Special Committee of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association; a member unit of the Breast Disease Group of the Pathology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association; the deputy-chair unit of the Pathology Alliance of the Medical, Pharmaceutical and Health Great Health Committee of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Cooperation Promotion Association; the deputy-chair unit of the Pathology Special Committee of the Guangdong Association of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine; the deputy-chair unit of the Kidney Clinical Pathology Special Committee of the Guangdong Association of Chinese Medicine; the chair unit of the Pathology Physicians Branch of the Shenzhen Medical Doctors Association; the leading unit of the Expert Group for Pathological Diagnosis of the Shenzhen Breast Cancer Prevention and Treatment Center; the deputy-director unit of the Shenzhen Clinical Pathology Quality Control Center; and the deputy-chair unit of the Pathology Branch of the Shenzhen Medical Association. 【Department Leadership】 Professor Shao Mumin has served as the first director of the Department of Pathology and remains in the position to this day. 【Research Scope】 The department is dedicated to pathological diagnosis, research and teaching in the fields of breast pathology, renal biopsy pathology, cytopathology, gastrointestinal pathology, gynecologic pathology and molecular pathology. It has established platforms including an ultrastructural pathology transmission electron microscopy platform, a molecular pathology PCR platform, a next-generation sequencing platform, a laser microdissection platform, a laser confocal platform, a molecular experimentation platform, and a cell and organoid culture platform. Its research scope encompasses the diagnosis and study of multiple types of tumors. 【Department Operations】 The department comprises the Futian Hospital Campus and the Guangming Hospital Campus and has a medical and technical team of 22 members, including multiple Pengcheng Outstanding Talents, doctoral supervisors and master's supervisors, and has trained multiple graduate students. Nearly 50,000 histopathological diagnoses are performed annually. Services include routine pathology, cytopathology, immunopathology, intraoperative frozen-section pathology, ultrastructural pathology and molecular pathology, among others, with a comprehensive range of services. With support from Shenzhen's “Three Famous” Project in Medical and Health Care, in 2025 the department introduced “Professor Bu Hong's pathology team from West China Hospital of Sichuan University,” dedicated to improving the specialty's pathological diagnostic and research capabilities. To promote disciplinary development, it successively established subspecialties in breast pathology, renal biopsy pathology, cytopathology, gastrointestinal pathology and lymphoma pathology. To fully leverage the advantages of pathology in medical care, education and research, the department successively applied for and was approved to lead 2 General Program projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 1 subproject of a National Major Science and Technology Project, 1 Guangdong Provincial Natural Science Foundation project, 1 Guangdong Provincial Medical Research Foundation project and 8 Shenzhen Natural Science Foundation projects; it collaborated in the “Major Scientific Research Project on the Diagnosis and Treatment of Early Gastric Cancer of Xiyuan Hospital, China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences”; it has published more than 100 professional papers in domestic and international academic journals, including 53 papers as corresponding/first author (28 SCI papers); and 6 invention patents have been granted. It took the lead in formulating the Guidelines for the Pathological Diagnosis of Breast Cytology in Shenzhen; it drafted the Chinese Expert Consensus on the Pathological Diagnosis of Granulomatous Lobular Mastitis (2024 Edition); it served as chief editor of the Atlas of Breast Cytopathology (currently pending publication); and it took the lead in establishing and operating the “National Consultation Center for Inflammatory Breast Lesions” platform. Currently, 59 medical institutions are registered on the platform, covering 17 provinces and regions in China. Pathology is the foundation of medicine. Looking to the future, the department will aim to build a “Regional Pathological Diagnosis Center for Breast Diseases” and “create a demonstration institution for the development of a pathology department in a national hospital of traditional Chinese medicine,” deepening the coordinated development of “medical care, education, research and industry.” Taking clinical pathological diagnosis as its foundation, it will continue to deepen clinical pathology and research. Upholding the patient-centered mission, it will practice the medical humanistic care of “precise diagnosis and wholehearted service” and build a “precise, efficient and warm” medical service system. 【Department Group Photo】
