Day Surgery Center

The Day Surgery Center of Shenzhen Children’s Hospital was established on June 1, 2021. Upholding the management philosophy of “safety, efficiency, professionalism, and innovation,” it continuously improves the quality of medical services under two-level hospital-and-department management.

The Day Surgery Center comprises the Appointment Service Center, Anesthesia Assessment Clinic, Inpatient Preparation Center, Day Surgery Operating Room, Post-Anesthesia Care Unit, and Day Surgery Ward. The major functional areas are located close together, and the process guidance is clear. The Day Surgery Center provides one-stop services integrating “surgical scheduling, anesthesia review, admission procedures, preoperative examinations, hospitalization, surgery, and postoperative follow-up,” enabling children and their parents to walk less and save time and effort while feeling reassured.

Scope of Diagnosis and Treatment

At present, day-surgery procedures have been carried out in 8 specialties and for 40 disease categories, including otorhinolaryngology and head and neck surgery, dentistry, orthopedics, urology, general surgery, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, and cardiology. Outpatient surgeries are also performed in dentistry, dermatology, and ophthalmology, covering common and frequently occurring surgical diseases in children.

Advantages and Distinctive Features

Compared with the traditional healthcare model, day surgery saves time and medical resources, without reducing service or quality! The implementation of day surgery has alleviated the problems of long surgical scheduling times and the difficulty of securing a hospital bed. From the surgical outpatient visit through completion of the preoperative examinations and discharge, only half a day is needed. Building on day surgery, the Children’s Hospital is making every effort to provide “same-day discharge” surgery—“surgery today, home today.” Patients do not stay overnight in the hospital and complete their recovery at home under the guidance of medical and nursing staff. On the day of surgery, from admission through completion of the operation and discharge, the process takes as little as 3～4 hours.

Beginning in September 2025, outpatient surgeries in dentistry, dermatology, and ophthalmology have been gradually introduced at the Day Surgery Center. While this new model of converting outpatient surgery into day surgery strengthens the perioperative safety safeguards for children, it has also significantly improved the healthcare experience of children undergoing outpatient surgery and their families.

Advanced Equipment

The Day Surgery Operating Room is fully equipped with, among other things, a high-definition endoscopic system specially designed for children, anesthesia machines, multiparameter monitors, ventilators, and defibrillators. The Day Surgery Ward is equipped with a central monitoring system that monitors children’s postoperative conditions in real time to ensure medical safety.

Head of the Department: Chief Physician in Anesthesiology, Doctor of Medicine, and supervisor of master’s students, with extensive experience in clinical pediatric anesthesia. Academic appointments: Standing Committee Member of the Pediatric Anesthesiology Branch and Committee Member of the Day Surgery Anesthesiology Branch of the Chinese Society of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesiology; Standing Committee Member of the Pediatric Anesthesiology Branch of the China Medical Education Association; Committee Member of the Anesthesiology and Therapeutics Branch of the Guangdong Medical Association; Deputy Chair of the Specialized Committee on Day Surgery Management of the Shenzhen Hospital Association; and others.

Head Nurse of the Department: Associate Chief Nurse, with extensive experience in pediatric surgical nursing. Academic appointments: Standing Committee Member of the Specialized Committee on Day Surgery Nursing of the Guangdong Nursing Association; Standing Committee Member of the Branch for Day Surgery Center Development and Quality Evaluation of the Guangdong Nurses Association; Standing Committee Member of the Second Nursing Education Branch of the Guangdong Nurses Association; Deputy Chair of the Specialized Committee on Day Medical Nursing of the Shenzhen Nursing Association; and others.

Talent Development and Continuing Education

Focusing on the diagnostic and treatment characteristics of pediatric day surgery, the department has established a tiered talent-development system. The head of the department participates in the Shenzhen Elite Talent Training program, and core nurses are selected and sent in batches to receive specialized nurse training in operating-room nursing, anesthesia nursing, pediatric surgery, and other fields, supporting rapid recovery after day surgery. Specialized skills training, dedicated nursing training, and interdisciplinary learning are conducted routinely. The department actively connects with cutting-edge diagnostic and treatment concepts in China and abroad and encourages medical and nursing staff to participate in continuing education, skills competitions, public science education, and academic exchanges. It continually strengthens the professional foundation and improves diagnostic, treatment, and nursing standards, building a high-quality day-surgery team of medical, anesthesia, and nursing professionals with both professional competence and humanistic care.

Research and Academic Standing

The department is working to develop a research-oriented ward, conducting multicenter clinical studies and undertaking multiple horizontal research projects related to day surgery. It has served as chief editor of one book (People’s Health Publishing House), participated in compiling 3 expert consensuses related to day medicine, published multiple articles in SCI-indexed and core journals, and applied for multiple patents.

In September 2021, it became a member institution of the China Day Surgery Alliance. In May 2024, it was awarded the designation of National Sentinel Hospital for Standardized Management of Day Medical Quality by the National Health Commission. In November 2024, it was awarded the titles of Demonstration Institution for Standardized Management of Day-Surgery Anesthesia and Standardized Anesthesia Outpatient Training Base by the Chinese Society of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesiology.
