Radiotherapy
Our hospital’s Department of Radiation Oncology was established in 1993 and is the largest pulmonary tumor radiotherapy center in China. In recent years, annual outpatient visits have exceeded 60,000, and nearly 5,000 patients with pulmonary malignancies have been admitted for radiotherapy each year. The department has a professional technical team of more than 60 medical staff, including physicians, nurses, physicists, and technicians. There are 2 chief physicians, 5 deputy chief physicians, 1 professor, 1 associate professor, and 2 doctoral supervisors. A precision radiotherapy laboratory for lung cancer is under construction.
The level of lung cancer diagnosis and treatment is at the forefront in China. Diagnostic procedures such as CT-guided lung tumor puncture and fiberoptic bronchoscopy biopsy can be routinely performed. Advanced international radiotherapy techniques for lung cancer can also be routinely performed, including intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) based on four-dimensional chest CT, volumetric-modulated arc therapy (VMAT), stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), and image (PET/CT, MRI)-guided radiation therapy (IGRT). The annual number of patients receiving stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) for early-stage lung cancer ranks first nationwide. Clinical research is actively conducted; the department currently leads or participates in more than 10 clinical studies of multidisciplinary comprehensive treatment for lung cancer centered on radiotherapy, including 8 domestic and international multicenter studies combining targeted therapy or immunotherapy with radiotherapy. These include adjuvant immunotherapy after SBRT for patients with early-stage non-small-cell lung cancer, combined radiotherapy and immunotherapy for patients with locally advanced non-small-cell lung cancer, and combined radiotherapy and immunotherapy for patients with small-cell lung cancer.
The team has led 5 National Natural Science Foundation research projects, published more than 200 professional academic papers, and received approval for 9 national patents (including 5 invention patents, 3 utility model patents, and 1 design patent). Multiple research results have been cited in current lung cancer diagnosis and treatment guidelines. The research achievements have participated in or won first place in more than 10 national-, provincial-, and ministerial-level scientific research awards, including the National Science and Technology Progress Award and the Shanghai Anti-Cancer Science and Technology Award. The team contributed to the compilation of the CSCO Consensus on the Diagnosis and Treatment of Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer, the Clinical Guidelines for Radiotherapy of Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer in China (2020 edition), and the first national Chinese Expert Consensus on Stereotactic Radiotherapy for Early-Stage Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer (2019 edition).
The department actively conducts domestic and international exchanges and cooperation, has organized many high-level domestic academic conferences, and runs the “Yeyuan Lung Cancer Radiotherapy Salon” to strengthen academic exchange and experience sharing with peers in China and abroad. Each year it applies to organize 2 national continuing medical education courses related to precision radiotherapy and multidisciplinary comprehensive treatment of lung cancer. Based on the department’s strengths in treating lung cancer as a single disease, it runs the “Lung Cancer Radiotherapy Target Volume Delineation Workshop” and the “Early-Stage Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) Training Course,” which have received unanimous praise from participants. Department members have spoken at leading international conferences many times.
All staff of our hospital’s Department of Radiation Oncology will uphold the Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital’s fine tradition of putting patients at the center and medical quality at the core, carry forward the spirit of the times characterized by broad expertise, precision, innovation, unity, and cooperation, and continue to advance in order to provide efficient, high-quality medical services for patients with lung cancer and strive to build an internationally renowned and nationally first-class specialty in pulmonary tumor radiotherapy.
