The Department of Anesthesiology is one of the first teaching bases in Shanghai for the standardized training of anesthesiology residents, a Shanghai base for the standardized training of anesthesiology specialists, and one of the first Ministry of Health bases for comfort-oriented medical care; it also houses the Pulmonary Hospital’s Acupuncture Anesthesia Research Laboratory. At the largest pulmonary hospital, the Department of Anesthesiology has a distinctive specialty focus on pulmonary diseases and is particularly skilled in anesthesia for all types of surgery, including thoracic surgery and difficult-airway procedures, as well as for pulmonary interventional diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. It has unique experience in anesthesia for lung transplantation, severe pulmonary dysfunction, lung volume reduction surgery, complex and difficult tracheal surgery, carinal resection and reconstruction, giant mediastinal tumors accompanied by superior vena cava syndrome, and resection and reconstruction of the superior vena cava and innominate vein, as well as other borderline diseases. It performs anesthesia for 20,000 thoracic surgeries annually, with its related workload ranking among the highest in the world. The Endoscopy Department’s volume of bronchoscopic interventional diagnosis and treatment is also nearly 20,000 cases/year. The Department of Anesthesiology took the lead in China in carrying out and promoting painless flexible bronchoscopy examination and treatment on a large scale, and has extensive experience in airway stent placement under general anesthesia, bronchoscopy examinations, treatments, and other procedures. It also actively promotes painless flexible bronchoscopy examination technology and hosts the national continuing medical education program “New Advances in Painless Bronchoscopy Examination and Treatment Techniques” every year, exerting considerable influence in the field.

The Department of Anesthesiology has a complete organizational structure and currently has 31 anesthesiologists, 7 people with senior professional titles, 2 postdoctoral fellows, 10 doctoral degree holders, 19 master’s degree holders, and 6 recipients of various talent programs, including the Shanghai Pujiang Talent Program, the Health Commission’s “Medical Garden New Star” Outstanding Young Medical Talent program, the Excellent Young Physicians program, and the China Association for Science and Technology Young Talent Support Program. The anesthesia nursing team has 11 members, and the operating-room nursing team has 68 members.

The discipline leaders and principal members of the department currently hold more than 30 academic positions, including executive council member of the Chinese Society of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesiology; deputy chair of its Thoracic Branch and Translational Medicine Branch; standing committee member and deputy secretary-general of the Anesthesia and Brain Function Branch of the Chinese Society for Neuroscience; standing committee member of the Anesthesiology Professional Committee of the Chinese Medical Education Association; deputy chair of the Anesthesiology Professional Committee of the Chinese Association for the Promotion of Human Health Science and Technology; member of the Thoracic Branch of the Anesthesiology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association; member of the Anesthesiology Professional Committee of the Chinese Association of Integrative Medicine; member of the Anesthesiology Committee of the Chinese Research-Oriented Society; head of the Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Group of the Anesthesiology Branch of the Shanghai Medical Association; member of the Anesthesiology Branch of the Shanghai Medical Association; member of the Anesthesiology Branch of the Shanghai Medical Doctor Association; standing committee member of the Pain and Anesthesiology Professional Committee of the Shanghai Association of Integrative Traditional and Western Medicine; member of the International Airway Society; corresponding editorial board members and reviewers for more than 10 domestic and international core journals, including the Chinese Journal of Anesthesiology, Journal of Clinical Anesthesiology, and SCI-indexed journals; and review experts for Divisions 1 and 6 of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. They host and co-host more than 10 international and domestic academic conferences, continuing medical education courses, and other events every year, and have a certain influence in the field.

In recent years, the discipline leaders and principal members have obtained 7 National Natural Science Foundation projects and more than 20 projects of various types from the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Science and Technology, Shanghai Shenkang Hospital Development Center, the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Health and Family Planning, and other organizations, with research funding of more than 5 million. The main research directions of the department are: anesthesia management for thoracic surgery, enhanced recovery after thoracic surgery, lung transplantation anesthesia, anesthesia management for painless bronchoscopy, the mechanisms and prevention and treatment of acute lung injury, perioperative lung protection, and others. In recent years, more than 100 papers have been published, with more than 60 indexed by SCI. Authorization has been obtained for more than 40 national invention patents and utility model patents.

As an affiliated teaching hospital of Tongji University, the Department of Anesthesiology’s teaching team currently has 3 full and associate professors, 10 lecturers, 2 doctoral supervisors, and 3 master’s supervisors, and enrolls 3-6 postdoctoral fellows, doctoral students, and master’s students every year. There are more than 10 postdoctoral fellows, doctoral students, and master’s students currently in residence. Over the past 3 years, students under its guidance have received the China Association for Science and Technology Young Talent Support Program, the China Postdoctoral Science Foundation, the National Scholarship for Graduate Students, Outstanding Graduate awards, Outstanding Doctoral and Master’s Thesis awards, and other honors, totaling more than 10 person-times. The department undertakes teaching tasks including specialist physician training, standardized resident training, Tongji University graduate courses, PBL courses, undergraduate clinical clerkships, and instruction of visiting trainees.

Relying on a first-class hospital platform, the department will strive to become a first-class anesthesiology discipline with a distinctive pulmonary specialty focus, advanced technology, and a certain international influence.
