Laboratory Medicine
The Laboratory Department follows the principle of safety first, quality foremost, excellent service and efficient management, providing comprehensive services to clinicians and patients. It has 8 subspecialty laboratories: clinical biochemistry, clinical microbiology, clinical blood/body fluids, clinical immunology/endocrinology, clinical gene amplification, clinical transfusion and cytogenetics. Nearly 200 test items are performed; in 2022, 20 million tests were completed. The department achieved excellent results in the Shanghai Clinical Laboratory Center’s 2022 quality-control inspection.
It has advanced automated equipment, including a fully automated coagulation-analysis line, blood-cell analyzer, biochemical analyzer, chemiluminescence immunoassay analyzer, enzyme-immunoassay system, microbial identification instrument and mass-spectrometry system, quantitative fluorescence PCR, and automated blood-group analysis, providing timely and accurate results.
Reproductive-immunology and clinical-transfusion testing are specialties. Fifty reproductive-immunology tests (sex hormones, thyroid function, insulin, autoantibodies, platelet aggregation, homocysteine and thrombophilia) provide valuable data for recurrent miscarriage, reproductive medicine and obstetric endocrine disease. Transfusion testing provides obstetric special blood-group testing, transfusion/crossmatching and neonatal hemolytic-disease testing, including RHD-negative confirmation and neonatal hemolytic-disease elution/release tests. It is crucial for rare maternal RHD blood-group diagnosis, rational blood use, critical obstetric rescue and timely diagnosis and treatment of neonatal hemolytic disease. The department has 76 staff; 53% have intermediate or senior titles and 18% have master’s or higher degrees. In five years it published 33 SCI and 42 Chinese-core-journal papers.
