Neonatology
Basic Information:
In 1993, the Department of Neonatology became the Shanghai Premature Infant Care Center and one of the six critical newborn consultation and emergency rescue centers in Shanghai, providing specialized neonatal medical services for Shanghai and the Yangtze River Delta region. The department is equipped with 38 beds with comprehensive tertiary-level neonatal intensive care facilities and 80 regular neonatal beds. It possesses a range of technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of critically ill premature infants, including conventional-frequency and high-frequency mechanical ventilation, surfactant therapy, iNO, exchange transfusion, mild hypothermia, genetic diagnosis, metabolic disease and hearing screening, immunization and preventive vaccination for newborn infants, as well as perinatal consultation and post-discharge follow-up and rehabilitation guidance for critically ill newborns.
In recent years, the Department of Neonatology has participated in the delivery of approximately 25,000 newborns each year. More than 4,000 high-risk newborns, including premature infants and newborns with asphyxia or pneumonia, are discharged annually; 99.8% of hospitalized newborns survive after treatment. More than 200 extremely low birth weight infants are rescued each year, of whom 95% survive to discharge, reaching an advanced level nationally. Of the 50 infants with a gestational age of less than 28 weeks, 80% survive to discharge. Hospitalized newborns can use cloud visitation and the WeChat platform, providing parents with convenient channels for regular visitation and communication, enabling them to promptly learn about the child’s condition, and helping the breast-feeding rate among premature infants in our hospital reach more than 70%. An Internet-based national collaborative follow-up network for premature infants has been established to provide long-term support covering most regions for families of premature infants, including home care for premature infants, health management, disease consultation, and emergency care.
