Obstetrics
The Department of Obstetrics of Shanghai First Maternity and Infant Health Hospital is one of the first national clinical key specialties, a national specialty for distinctive perinatal healthcare, a national advanced demonstration unit for maternal and infant safety, and one of the first national standardized residency training bases. It is now Shanghai's Obstetrics Clinical Quality Control Center, a member of the Shanghai Municipal Hospital Obstetrics Alliance, and home to the Shanghai Key Laboratory of Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Shanghai Obstetrics Simulation Training Center. It received the 2021 Shanghai March 8th Red Flag Collective and Shanghai Workers' Pioneer honors. The obstetrics departments at the east and west campuses are managed uniformly, with consistent outpatient-to-ward care and responsibility assigned to the primary physician team. For many years, the hospital's obstetrics department has ranked first in Shanghai and among the national leaders in number of deliveries. On average, one of every 4–5 newborns born in Shanghai is delivered here.
The General Obstetrics Department of Shanghai First Maternity and Infant Health Hospital (Group 5, East Campus Obstetrics), as a core foundational unit of obstetrics, has long provided healthy pregnant women with systematic diagnosis, treatment and health management that are “whole-cycle, standardized and precise.” It provides integrated care from pre-pregnancy assessment and antenatal monitoring to postpartum rehabilitation, comprehensively safeguarding the safety of mothers and infants in normal pregnancies.
While consolidating basic perinatal care, the general obstetrics group continues to expand its services and coverage. Early-pregnancy precise screening and multilevel risk assessment enable early identification and individualized intervention for high-risk pregnancy factors. For pregnant and postpartum women with special circumstances (such as a history of gynecologic or obstetric surgery, twin pregnancy or breech presentation), the department integrates multidisciplinary resources within the hospital to provide scientific, standardized and comprehensive perinatal management, safeguarding delivery and improving pregnancy quality.
The department emphasizes standardized clinical pathways to protect normal pregnancy and delivery, and precise management strategies for complex obstetric conditions. Relying on solid basic services and a complete whole-course management system, it significantly reduces pregnancy and childbirth risks and improves maternal and neonatal outcomes.
