Ultrasound
The Department of Ultrasound of Shanghai First Maternity and Infant Health Hospital was established in 1973. For nearly 50 years, the Department of Ultrasound has consistently kept pace with the times and gradually developed and grown. It is currently a doctoral degree-granting site in Ultrasound Medicine at Tongji University, with a well-developed professional echelon, excellent equipment, rigorous diagnostics, and strict teaching, and it plays a unique and important role in the hospital’s clinical diagnosis and treatment.
In 1988, our department took the lead in performing transvaginal ultrasonography, becoming the first hospital in Shanghai to perform this examination. In the same year, it was recognized as the Shanghai Obstetrics and Gynecology Ultrasound Consultation Center. Since the 1990s, it has carried out color Doppler ultrasonography, and in 2000 it was again the first in Shanghai to carry out three-dimensional ultrasound imaging. Since 2001, it has carried out prenatal ultrasound screening for fetal malformations, and since 2017 it has carried out fetal cardiac ultrasound, adult cardiac ultrasound, and female pelvic floor ultrasound. In 2018, it introduced Professor Ren Min, a discipline leader, to serve as director of the Department of Ultrasound, expanding its provision of adult cardiac ultrasound, lower-extremity venous vascular ultrasound, and pelvic floor ultrasound. It subsequently launched new services including contrast-enhanced ultrasonography of the fallopian tubes, neonatal lung ultrasound, elastography ultrasound of the breast, thyroid, and cervix, and endometrial receptivity ultrasound examinations, taking the Department of Ultrasound to a new level.
The department currently has 43 physicians (including 2 re-employed physicians), including 1 doctoral supervisor, 3 holders of doctoral degrees, 3 doctoral students currently in service, 26 holders of master’s degrees, 11 with senior professional titles, and 16 with intermediate professional titles.
Since 1986, our department has organized continuing education courses in obstetrics and gynecology, training ultrasound physicians and technicians for all districts and counties of Shanghai, while receiving and actively training visiting physicians and technicians from all parts of the country throughout the year. By 2024, it had successfully held four editions of the Yifuying Ultrasound Forum, focusing on an exchange conference on new ultrasound technologies for maternal and infant health. At the conference, participants jointly discussed the cutting-edge progress of new ultrasound medical technologies and standardized diagnosis in the field of maternal and infant health.
Based on the characteristics of obstetrics and gynecology, the Department of Ultrasound puts patients at the center of everything, conducts examinations conscientiously, makes precise diagnoses, and is always prepared to coordinate the transport of critically ill and severely ill patients, striving to gain every second for life. The Department of Ultrasound has also never stopped moving forward, striving to build a first-class professional team and working tirelessly to ensure the safety of pregnant women, women in childbirth, and newborns, and to contribute to the health of women everywhere.
