Pathology
The Department of Pathology of Shanghai First Maternity and Infant Health Hospital was founded in 1956. It is one of the earliest pathology departments established in the People's Republic of China and one of the pioneering departments for perinatal pathology in China. It is also one of Shanghai's first standardized residency training bases for pathology (in partnership with the Department of Pathology of Huashan Hospital affiliated with Fudan University) and one of Shanghai's first training bases for pathology specialists in female reproductive and breast pathology.
The department promotes the cultural spirit of unity and harmony, rigor and conscientiousness, and continuous learning and progress. It continually trains outstanding pathology professionals, and its staff has continued to grow. There are currently 38 employees, including 18 pathologists and 20 technical and research personnel. Among the physicians are three chief physicians, three deputy chief physicians, three holders of doctoral degrees, and 15 holders of master's degrees; among the technical and research personnel, five have intermediate or higher professional titles, one has a doctoral degree, and four have master's degrees. All department members work closely together. While completing routine pathology services to a high standard, they strive for progress and continually scale new heights in the medical, teaching, and research work of obstetrics and gynecology. They have achieved excellent results in teaching competitions and published a series of high-level clinical and basic research papers, promoting the development of pathology at our hospital.
Teaching and research training
The department continually strengthens teaching, diagnostic, and research work, improves talent-training programs and faculty training, establishes a quality-control group, and strictly supervises routine process assessments to comprehensively improve pathology development. In July 2023, the Department of Pathology Teaching and Research Office was established. In recent years, our department has jointly trained dozens of Shanghai standardized residency trainees and more than ten standardized specialist physician trainees. Our department led the establishment of the Pudong New Area Obstetrics and Gynecology Pathology Alliance development project, receives visiting physicians for further training year-round, trains a group of obstetrics and gynecology pathology professionals for Shanghai and other provinces and cities, and advances the progress and development of obstetrics and gynecology pathology.
The department strengthens external exchange and cooperation, invites well-known experts from China and abroad to participate in academic activities, and hosts national- and municipal-level continuing-education courses in obstetrics and gynecology pathology. For a long time, the department has undertaken teaching for the Vaginal and Cervical Exfoliative Cytology Professional Staff Training Course organized by the Shanghai Women's Health Institute under commission from the Maternal and Child Health Division of the Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau. From 2017 to 2019, our department actively hosted the Cervical Cytology Standardized Cytology Training Course of the Cervical Cytology Branch of the Chinese Association of Eugenics Science (CSCCP) for three consecutive years, each time receiving favorable reviews.
In recent years, the department has completed four national- and municipal-bureau-level projects, and has published more than ten SCI papers and more than twenty papers indexed in the Chinese Statistical Source journals.
Specialty development
Pathology is developing rapidly worldwide, with new technologies and diagnostic revolutions emerging one after another. Standing at the forefront of a new era, all department members will continue to move forward, focus on deepening the discipline, strengthen collaborative efforts, and accelerate the development of pathology subspecialties. We will gradually form a 3+1 subspecialty system featuring gynecological subspecialties as the traditional strength and comprehensive development of the obstetrics specialty. We will solidly advance molecular pathology, promote precision pathology-based medicine, advance obstetrics and gynecology research, solve difficult medical problems in obstetrics and gynecology, and contribute to the rapid development of the hospital and the building of Healthy China.
