Pharmacy
Shanghai Children's Medical Center, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine
Shanghai Children's Medical Center's Department of Pharmacy is a pediatric-specialty pharmacy discipline integrating pediatric pharmaceutical services, teaching, and the training of research personnel; it is a clinical pharmacist training base of the National Health Commission and the Chinese Hospital Association, and a demonstration base for rational drug use of the China Medical Education Association. It also undertakes undergraduate teaching for institutions such as Macau University of Science and Technology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, and Shanghai University of Medicine & Health Sciences, as well as internship instruction and supervision for junior-college and undergraduate pharmacy students from Shanghai University of Medicine & Health Sciences and other institutions. In recent years, it has received 2 grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China; the numbers of research projects, papers, and patents have all continued to grow.
The department has an outpatient pharmacy, a hematology pharmacy, an emergency pharmacy, a fever pharmacy, an operating-room pharmacy, an inpatient pharmacy, a traditional Chinese medicine granule pharmacy, a drug warehouse, PIVAS, OVAS, clinical pharmacy, and other sections. It currently has 98 employees, including 25 members of the Communist Party of China and 49 personnel with intermediate or higher professional titles.
In response to the lack of dosage forms specifically for children, the inpatient pharmacy, from the very beginning of the hospital's establishment in 1998, implemented unit-dose dispensing of oral medications for inpatients, ensuring the accuracy of patients' medication doses. It successively established PIVAS and OVAS, enabling the centralized preparation of intravenous medications 24 hours a day for all outpatients, emergency patients, and inpatients throughout the hospital, ensuring the quality of infusions, strengthening staff protection, effectively inhibiting the emergence of drug-resistant bacteria in the hospital, and safeguarding medical safety.
The clinical pharmacy section currently has 14 full-time clinical pharmacists, who have joined the clinical treatment teams and assist physicians with rational drug use; by means of drug-metabolizing enzyme assays, TDM, pharmacogenetic testing, and other methods, they assist clinical teams in establishing individualized dosing regimens, improving clinical efficacy, reducing adverse drug reactions, and ensuring that medication use in clinical practice is safe, effective, economical, and appropriate.
The department has established the science-popularization outreach brand project 《I “Need” Health》, through which it promotes knowledge of rational drug use by means of on-site presentations, a WeChat public account, videos, and other methods, and focuses on medication safety for children.
