Nephrology

The Nephrology Department of Shandong Provincial Hospital was founded in 1986. It chairs the nephrology branch of the Shandong Medical Association and serves as the provincial kidney disease quality control center, one of the first Ministry of Health peritoneal dialysis training demonstration centers, a clinical pharmacist training base in nephrology, the Shandong subcenter and a core unit of the National Clinical Research Center for Kidney Diseases, a provincial key clinical specialty, a master's and doctoral degree program and a postdoctoral station. As a provincial center for kidney disease care, research, teaching and training, it guides development of the specialty.

The department has wards at the central and eastern campuses and a blood purification center, with 68 open beds, 37 hemodialysis machines, four continuous blood purification machines and one hemoperfusion machine. Its 65 medical staff include 16 with senior professional titles, three doctoral and ten master's supervisors. It diagnoses and treats primary glomerular disease, secondary kidney injury, acute and chronic kidney failure from various causes, hereditary and rare kidney diseases, and complex critical cases. Services include renal biopsy, renal pathology, blood purification, peritoneal dialysis, arteriovenous fistula creation and management of difficult vascular access; the team consults on and rescues difficult critical kidney cases across the province.

Research covers mechanisms and new diagnostic and treatment techniques for chronic kidney disease, diabetic kidney disease and complications of hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. The department reports 16 National Natural Science Foundation grants and 14 projects from the Shandong Natural Science Foundation, Young Scientist Award Fund and provincial science, medical and health development programs; it also participates in national Twelfth Five-Year science support, international collaborations and Ministry of Health clinical key project substudies. It has published more than 100 academic papers, over 80 indexed in SCI.
