Cardiac and Great Vessel Surgery

The Cardiac and Vascular Surgery Department of the Affiliated Provincial Hospital of Shandong First Medical University (Shandong Provincial Hospital) was founded in the early 1950s. It is the birthplace of cardiovascular surgery in Shandong Province. It is one of the first batch of national key clinical specialties, the first batch of key specialties of the health system of Shandong Province, the first batch of master and doctoral training units in Shandong Province, the first batch of specialist training bases of the Ministry of Health, and the Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Medical and Health Cardiac Surgery. It was shortlisted for the top 15 nationally in the "China's Best Clinical Discipline Evaluation Ranking".

The department has wards in the Cardiac and Vascular Surgery Center and Olympic Sports Hospital, with 177 regular beds, 56 monitoring beds, 3 wards, and 2 modern ICUs. At present, the department has an annual outpatient volume of more than 35,000, and an annual operation volume of more than 3,500. The department currently has 54 physicians, including 10 professors (chief physicians), 15 associate professors (deputy chief physicians), 5 full-time monitoring physicians, and 6 full-time extracorporeal circulation perfusion physicians. There are 164 nursing staff, including 3 deputy chief nurses. There are 45 people with doctorate degrees in all disciplines.

The department has formed five sub-specialty development directions: congenital heart disease, valvular heart disease, coronary heart disease surgery, macrovascular disease, and minimally invasive/interventional cardiac surgery. Among them, congenital heart disease has become the leader in the province, heart valve surgery has become the benchmark in the province, the coronary heart disease center has now ranked among the top ten coronary heart disease centers in the country, the large vascular surgery department currently leads the country, and the interventional cardiac surgery department will be approved as a heart valve intervention center construction unit in 2024.

In recent years, the department has achieved a series of innovative results around technological innovation and achievement transformation in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac and macrovascular diseases. Relying on the Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Medical and Health Cardiac Surgery and the National Key Clinical Specialty Platform, the department has formed a complete scientific research system around six major directions: aortic dissection, minimally invasive structural heart disease, myocardial protection, coronary heart disease, congenital heart disease and pulmonary hypertension, artificial heart and heart transplantation. The results cover five major areas: national projects, provincial and ministerial awards, original patents, high-level papers, and diagnosis and treatment technology system transformation. It has presided over more than 10 projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and has presided over more than 40 Shandong Provincial Key R&D Plans, Shandong Provincial Natural Science Foundation, Shandong Provincial Medical and Health Science and Technology Development Plan, and Jinan Clinical Medical Science and Technology Innovation Plan. The team has won more than ten Shandong Provincial Science and Technology Progress Awards and Shandong Provincial Medical Science and Technology Innovation Achievement Awards. It is the leading team in terms of number and level of cardiac surgery awards in the province; it has published a total of 200 SCI papers. He has published more than 10 articles in top cardiovascular journals; he has edited and translated many national-level specialist monographs. The above achievements have significantly promoted the improvement of the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac and macrovascular diseases.
