Shandong Provincial Stomatological Hospital (Department of Stomatology of Shandong Provincial Hospital) was established in 1922 and is one of the hospital’s eight earliest-established departments. It is a provincial specialty hospital relying on Shandong Provincial Hospital Affiliated to Shandong First Medical University, characterized by oral and maxillofacial surgery and emphasizing comprehensive oral treatment. It is a provincial clinical key specialty, a regional oral medical center in Shandong Province, and a national key standardized residency training base for general dentistry; it also operates as the School of Stomatology of Shandong First Medical University.
It currently has 90 comprehensive dental treatment chairs, three outpatient clinics and two independently organized wards, with 68 beds in total. It comprises the Central Campus, East Campus and the Outpatient Clinic for the Shandong Provincial Party Committee offices. There are 210 medical and nursing staff, including 123 specialist physicians, of whom 15 are chief physicians and 31 are associate chief physicians; 43 hold doctoral degrees. Its annual outpatient volume exceeds 170,000 visits, and its surgical volume exceeds 3,400 procedures, making it one of the major bases for oral healthcare, education and research in Shandong Province.
In March 2012, the techniques of combined radical treatment for oral and craniofacial tumors, correction of craniofacial deformities, and radioactive seed implantation for oral and maxillofacial malignant tumors passed the expert acceptance organized by the National Health Commission, obtaining the first batch of Class III technical certifications representing the highest level of clinical treatment; it was the only institution in Shandong Province to receive this certification. In recent years, it has established the Shandong Provincial Innovation Alliance for Oral and Maxillofacial Repair and Reconstruction Technologies, the Alliance for the Development of the Shandong Provincial Scientific and Technological Innovation Platform for Oral Cancer Health and Medical Big Data, and the Shandong Provincial Clinical Key Specialty Alliance for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. These initiatives have raised the level of diagnosis and treatment of oral and maxillofacial tumors and the repair and reconstruction of tissue defects in our province, and have promoted scientific and technological innovation and the transformation of research achievements.
The comprehensive sequential treatment of oral cancer offered by the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery has remained a provincial leader, is at the national forefront, and is aligned with international first-class standards. The combination of CAD/CAM and computer rapid prototyping technology with tissue-flap transplantation to repair jaw defects; the use of 3D-printed titanium materials to repair and reconstruct postoperative maxillary defects after tumor surgery; 3d-printed individualized templates to guide radioactive seed implantation; molecular fluorescence-assisted mandibular reconstruction with surgical navigation; and digital orthognathic surgery have all been at the forefront of medicine. In 2021, the project “Construction and Application of a Precision Treatment and Functional Repair and Reconstruction System for Oral and Maxillofacial Tumors” received the Second Prize of the Shandong Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award. In recent years, minimally invasive tooth extraction, Digital Smile Design (DSD), digital all-ceramic cosmetic veneers, invisible orthodontic treatment for malocclusion, and immediate implant and immediate restoration technologies offered in the outpatient clinics of the Stomatological Hospital have also achieved satisfactory outcomes and been welcomed by people from all sectors of society.
Shandong Provincial Stomatological Hospital is a standardized residency training base approved by the National Health Commission for oral and maxillofacial surgery, oral medicine, prosthodontics, orthodontics and general dentistry, as well as a specialty training base for oral and maxillofacial surgery.
