Paediatric Surgery

The Department of Pediatric Surgery of Shandong Provincial Hospital was founded in 1958. It is one of the earliest units in China to establish professional medical care in pediatric surgery. It is one of the first key medical and health disciplines in Shandong Province, the director unit of the Shandong Provincial Pediatric Surgery Quality Control Center, a master's and doctoral degree awarding site and postdoctoral mobile station of Shandong First Medical University, the first standardized training base for pediatric surgery residents in the country, and a national training base for pediatric surgery specialists. After more than 60 years of construction, it has developed into a comprehensive pediatric surgical diagnosis and treatment center that includes multiple subspecialties such as pediatric urology, pediatric general surgery, neonatal surgery, pediatric orthopedic surgery, and pediatric thoracic surgery, integrating medical care, teaching, and scientific research. It has become a large-scale professional discipline in Shandong Province and surrounding provinces.

The Pediatric Surgery Department of Shandong Provincial Hospital currently has 76 open beds, with more than 40,000 outpatient visits, and more than 4,000 discharged patients annually. Over 70% of patients are from other places. The sources of patients cover Heze, Liaocheng, Jining, Yantai, etc. in the province. It covers 16 prefectures and cities, and radiates to surrounding provinces such as Hebei, Henan, and Anhui. Its clinical diagnosis and treatment level ranks first in the country and in an advanced position in the province. It has formed a series of specialty specialties featuring the correction of congenital deformities, functional reconstruction, and injury repair. In collaboration with multiple departments including the Department of Imaging, Neonatology, Pediatric Intensive Care Medicine, and Pediatric Endocrinology and Digestion, we have accumulated rich clinical experience in rescuing critically ill surgical children, especially those with severe combined trauma. We have demonstrated strong comprehensive clinical first aid capabilities and won major rescue awards from the Provincial Health Commission.

The Department of Pediatric Surgery has a total of 26 physicians, 11 chief physicians, 4 deputy chief physicians, 16 people with doctorate degrees or above, 2 doctoral supervisors, and 5 master's degree supervisors; 1 expert enjoying the special allowance of the State Council, 1 young and middle-aged expert with outstanding contributions in Shandong Province, and 5 people with academic appointments at or above the provincial level. The talent echelon is reasonably matched, the old, middle and young are combined, diverse and complementary, and dynamically balanced.

The Department of Pediatric Surgery has received 4 grants from the National Natural Science Foundation and the Ministry of Science and Technology’s Key R&D Program, 28 provincial and ministerial-level grants, and 7 provincial-level and above awards. 12 national patents have been approved, including 7 invention patents and 5 utility model patents. Since 2017, the Department of Pediatric Surgery has published a total of 83 articles, 49 of which are included in SCI. The highest impact factor of a single article is 10.618. There are 7 articles in the first area or above of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Participated in the preparation of 18 domestic disease guidelines and consensus. Participated in the compilation of professional books such as "Pediatric Surgery" and "Pediatric Urology Diagnosis and Treatment Standards", and participated in the translation of "Campbell Urology", "L&W Pediatric Orthopedics", "Treatment Methods and Principles of Congenital Clubfoot" and other international works. In the past three years, it has trained 1 doctoral candidate, 11 professional master's degree students, and 16 residents in standardized training. It has recruited 1 doctoral candidate, 9 professional master's degree students, and 13 residents in standardized training.

In the past three years, the Department of Pediatric Surgery of Shandong Provincial Hospital, as the chairing unit of the Shandong Provincial Pediatric Surgery Quality Control Center and the chairing unit of the Pediatric Laparoscopic Surgeons Branch of the Shandong Physician Association, has organized 5 provincial and municipal training projects and 4 provincial quality control projects. In the past three years, it has accepted 14 trainees, and the passing rate of the graduation examination is 100%. Through "teaching, helping and leading", we will promote appropriate technologies to pediatric surgeries across the province, contribute to the homogeneity and standardization of pediatric surgical diagnosis and treatment, and demonstrate our responsibility as a leading discipline in the province.

For more than sixty years, we have been working hard to protect children's hearts with great strides. Several generations of people have passed down the work to build a high ground for pediatric outpatient diagnosis and treatment. The Pediatric Surgery Department of Shandong Provincial Hospital fulfills its mission with the benevolence of doctors. In the future, it will continue to uphold the original intention of "taking children as the center", deepen clinical practice, improve scientific research, and educate people, continue to improve the level of diagnosis and treatment and service quality, and write a new chapter of high-quality development of the pediatric surgery industry in Shandong Province with hard work and responsibility.
