Burns and Plastic Surgery

The Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery of Shandong Provincial Hospital is the earliest-established relevant specialty department in Shandong Province. Its current overall level and scale of medical care both rank first in Shandong Province, and it is a key discipline in medicine and health of Shandong Province. The department is the only doctoral training unit in plastic surgery at Shandong First Medical University, as well as a master's training unit in plastic surgery and burns. The department currently has more than 20 doctors, 8 staff members with senior professional titles, and 8 with associate senior professional titles. The department has more than 90 open beds, approximately more than 40,000 outpatient visits annually, more than 10,000 patients requiring surgical intervention and treatment, and more than 5,000 operations annually, placing it among the leading hospitals of comparable size nationwide.

At present, the department has developed a “one specialty with multiple strengths” goose-formation development pattern. “One specialty” refers to the comprehensive treatment of hemangiomas and vascular malformations. The department currently ranks among the domestic leaders in the research and treatment of hemangiomas. “Multiple strengths” refers to the department’s outstanding capabilities in other fields of burn and plastic surgery. It has begun to take shape in several areas, including extensive burns, scar reconstruction, external ear reconstruction, breast plastic surgery, and diabetic foot treatment, and it has been approved as the Shandong Provincial Engineering Technology Research Center for Wound Repair and Rehabilitation.

While advancing clinically, the department continuously emphasizes the strengthening of scientific research. It has 1 specially appointed expert under the “Taishan Scholars” program of Shandong Province and 1 Qilu health and wellness leading talent. It has received 1 third prize for scientific and technological progress from the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award and 3 second prizes for scientific and technological progress at the provincial or ministerial level. It is currently undertaking 5 national-level projects, 10 provincial-level projects, 1 municipal-level project, and 1 provincial-level scientific research platform. More than 50 SCI papers have been published over the past 5 years. The department has well-developed basic conditions for scientific research and has been approved as the Jinan Key Laboratory of Burns and Plastic Surgery. Medicine, education, and research mutually reinforce one another, enabling comprehensive development.
