Olympic Sports Center Campus Thoracic Surgery Ward 2 (Esophageal Ward)
The Department of Thoracic Surgery of Shandong Provincial Hospital is a clinical key specialty of Shandong Province and a standardized training base for thoracic surgeons and thoracoscopic physicians designated by the National Health Commission. Focusing on improving the diagnosis and treatment of common thoracic diseases as well as difficult and critical conditions, the department has long maintained a leading position in China in such fields as the precise diagnosis and treatment of early-stage lung cancer, extended resection for locally advanced lung cancer, minimally invasive surgical treatment of esophageal cancer/cardia cancer, and the diagnosis and treatment of difficult mediastinal diseases. It currently has 210 operational beds, more than 80,000 outpatient visits and nearly 10,000 operations annually; minimally invasive procedures account for more than 90%, grade-IV operations account for more than 95%, and its surgical volume ranks first in the province and among the top ten nationwide.
The Thoracic and Esophageal Surgery ward has a well-developed professional talent structure and currently has 11 physicians, including 4 chief physicians, 1 Taishan Scholars Young Expert, and 1 Qilu Outstanding Young Talent in Health and Healthcare, with strong professional and technical capabilities. The ward performs more than 1,500 operations annually, focusing mainly on minimally invasive surgical treatment of lung cancer, esophageal cancer, and gastroesophageal junction tumors. It was the first in the province to carry out and promote combined thoracoscopic-laparoscopic radical esophagectomy, minimally invasive surgery for gastroesophageal junction tumors, and gas-insufflation mediastinoscopic radical esophagectomy. It comprehensively performs single-port thoracoscopic lobectomy, segmentectomy/combined subsegmentectomy, Da Vinci robotic radical surgery for lung cancer and esophageal cancer/cardia cancer, and many other procedures. Its technical level is among the leading in China, and it has been approved by the National Cancer Center as a pilot unit for quality control of standardized diagnosis and treatment of esophageal cancer.
In view of the complexity of tumor treatment, the department comprehensively adopts a multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment model (MDT), overcoming the limitations of diagnosis and treatment conducted by surgery alone. It works jointly with oncology, gastroenterology, radiology, pathology, and other relevant disciplines to provide each patient with a tailored, individualized, precise, and standardized comprehensive treatment plan. At the same time, the concept of enhanced recovery (ERAS) is deeply integrated into the entire process of thoracic surgery diagnosis and treatment, minimizing surgical trauma to the greatest extent, effectively shortening the recovery period, and improving patients’ comfort and satisfaction with medical care.
