Sports Medicine
The Department of Sports Medicine of the Shandong Provincial Hospital Affiliated with Shandong First Medical University, formerly the Sports Medicine Group of the Department of Osteoarticular Surgery, was officially established on September 19, 2025. Over the years, under the leadership of predecessors including Professors Zhang Wei, Sun Shui, Wang Jian and Li Wei, rigor, exploration and responsibility have been integrated into the lifeblood of the department’s development.
The department currently has 5 physicians, all with doctoral degrees, and 4 of them have postdoctoral research experience. Several physicians have studied at internationally renowned medical centers, forming a medical team with a solid professional foundation and an international perspective.
Building on the forefront of clinical practice, in the field of shoulder joints, the department was among the first to perform advanced techniques including arthroscopic sandwich patch bridging lower trapezius tendon transfer, all-arthroscopic superior capsular reconstruction with an artificial ligament patch, Inspace balloon implantation, and reverse total shoulder arthroplasty. Focusing on elbow stiffness, a difficult clinical problem, the department has made minimally invasive elbow arthroscopy a distinctive area of development. For knee cruciate ligament injuries, the department performs all-inside cruciate ligament reconstruction and combined ALS reconstruction; the all-inside reconstruction technique received the Shandong Provincial Health Science and Technology Award. At the same time, the department was also among the earliest units in the province to perform hip arthroscopy.
The department places great importance on clinical teaching and talent development and currently has 3 master’s graduate supervisors. Department members have won the second prize in the National College Young Teachers Teaching Competition, the best historical result achieved by the Shandong medical group in this competition. The department has been approved to establish the second integrated diagnosis-and-treatment base for shoulder and elbow surgery, nursing and rehabilitation in northern China, a tutor unit for the Arthroscopy Training and Promotion Program of the Shandong Medical Doctor Association, and the Sports Medicine Training Base of the Shandong Public Health Association, among others. The department regularly accepts visiting physicians for advanced study and holds multiple national sports medicine and arthroscopy technology training and study-visit programs each year.
In recent years, the department has led 6 provincial-level research projects, published more than 30 SCI papers, and achieved results that won the First Prize for Innovation in Medical Science and Technology Achievements of Shandong Province and the First Prize of the Shandong Medical Science and Technology Award. It has been granted 7 invention patents and 1 software copyright, and multiple achievements have been clinically translated.
The department has always adhered to the philosophy of “function first, early rehabilitation, and return to sport,” establishing a sports injury diagnosis and treatment system covering the six major joints: shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee and ankle. It helps patients recover efficiently, return to sport and return to life. Guided by the spirit of our predecessors, we respond to trust with professionalism and lead the future through innovation; on the path of safeguarding sports and health, we continue to strive and advance toward a far-reaching future.
