1. Department History and Status

The Department of Oral Implantology was established in 1992 and is one of the earliest clinical, research and teaching bases for oral implantology established in China. Under the care of the leadership of the older generation of the provincial hospital, and led by Professor Brannmark, a world-renowned expert in oral implantology, and Professor Wang Dayuan of the University of California in the United States, the Oral Implantology Center of Shandong Provincial Hospital was jointly established. Since the mid-1990s, the department has carried out basic theoretical research on oral implantology, the development of domestic dental implants and their clinical application, laying a solid foundation for the development of the implantology discipline in China.

As one of the eight earliest established oral implantology centers in China, the Oral Implantology Center of Shandong Provincial Hospital has important influence in the industry and is also one of the domestic training and further-education bases for oral implantology physicians, undertaking the task of training grassroots personnel in oral implantology.

2. Talent Team

The department has a high-quality professional team, with 2 chief physicians, 1 associate chief physician and 2 attending physicians, and 4 members holding doctoral degrees. There are 3 postdoctoral fellows. Many physicians of the team have received systematic implant training in countries such as Europe and the United States, South Korea and Japan, possess rich clinical experience and an international perspective, and are able to proficiently master and innovate a variety of implant surgical and prosthetic techniques.

3. Technology and Equipment

The department adopts a world-class implant system and, combined with advanced medical technical equipment, provides patients with comprehensive implant-supported denture restoration services, including implant restoration for partial edentulism, implant restoration for complete edentulism and aesthetic restoration of anterior teeth. It has accumulated approximately more than thirty years of clinical cases and rich clinical experience.

The department actively carries out technological innovation, such as immediate implant placement and immediate restoration techniques, various bone grafting procedures, maxillary sinus floor elevation, implant aesthetic restoration, alveolar socket site preservation, minimally invasive implant placement under digital navigation and soft tissue reconstruction techniques, effectively solving the treatment difficulties of complex cases such as insufficient bone volume or insufficient soft tissue quality.

4. Research and Teaching

As a research and teaching base, the department undertakes a number of national and provincial and ministerial research projects, was the first to develop a domestic implant — the JTK implant — and undertook 50% of its phase III clinical study, which has already passed national acceptance and been approved for marketing. JTK is now widely used clinically in Southeast Asian countries, actively responding to the national strategy of "Belt and Road" in scientific and technological development. The Oral Implantology Center, as a main participating unit in the research of domestic biological membranes, undertakes 40% of the phase III clinical trial. The research results of the department's professional team have been published many times in first-class international implantology journals, promoting the continuous development of implant technology. The Department of Oral Implantology also undertakes the teaching task for undergraduate students majoring in stomatology at Shandong First Medical University.
