Central Campus Thoracic Surgery Ward 2 (Lung and Lung Transplant Ward)
Thoracic Surgery Department of the Provincial Hospital Affiliated to Shandong First Medical University (Shandong Provincial Hospital), established in the 1950s, is a key clinical specialty in Shandong Province, a national-level standardized training base for specialist physicians in thoracic surgery and thoracoscopy, and one of the first departments in China to obtain qualification certification for lung transplantation. The department serves as a designated site for the master's and doctoral programs in thoracic surgery and the postdoctoral mobile station of Shandong University and Shandong First Medical University, and has a Provincial Key Laboratory of Medicine and Health (Research on Diagnostic Technologies for Thoracic Tumors). Focusing on the diagnosis and treatment of common thoracic diseases and difficult, severe, and critical conditions, the department has long maintained a leading position in China in fields including precision diagnosis and treatment of early-stage lung cancer, extended resection for locally advanced lung cancer, minimally invasive surgery for esophageal and cardia cancers, lung transplantation, chest wall surgery, and the diagnosis and treatment of complex mediastinal diseases. The department has strong teaching and research capabilities, undertakes thoracic surgery teaching and standardized residency training, and trains more than 100 trainees annually. Over the past ten years, it has trained more than 30 doctoral students and more than 100 master's students; over the past three years, it has undertaken more than 20 national- and provincial-level research projects, published more than 70 SCI papers, and received 18 provincial- and ministerial-level science and technology awards. Discipline development continues to innovate, with medical care, teaching, and research developing in coordination, creating a new pattern of high-level, rapid development.
The Department of Thoracic Surgery has 4 wards: Central Campus Ward 1 (Lung · Chest Wall Ward), Central Campus Ward 2 (Lung · Lung Transplantation Ward), Olympic Sports Center Campus Ward 1 (Lung · Mediastinal Ward), and Olympic Sports Center Campus Ward 2 (Thoracic Surgery · Esophageal Ward). The department has a well-developed talent structure and currently has 54 physicians, including 17 chief physicians, 18 deputy chief physicians, 5 doctoral supervisors, and 29 graduate supervisors. It currently has 210 open beds, more than 80,000 outpatient visits annually, and nearly 10,000 surgeries annually; minimally invasive surgeries account for more than 90%, Level IV surgeries account for more than 95%, and its surgical volume ranks first in the province and among the top ten nationwide.
Thoracic Surgery Central Campus Ward 2 has a well-structured talent echelon and strong technical capabilities. It currently has 11 physicians, including 4 chief physicians, 6 master's and doctoral supervisors, and 1 postdoctoral co-supervisor; 15 nursing staff, including 2 nurses with graduate degrees and 1 deputy chief nurse. It has broad academic influence in the field, and the ward performs more than 2,100 surgeries annually.
Long committed to original research on “minimally invasive techniques,” the ward continuously optimizes surgical pathways and reduces trauma, has led three prospective multicenter clinical studies registered with China's National Health Commission and WHO, and organizes nationwide training courses year-round on “thoracoscopic surgery techniques without endotracheal intubation” and “day surgery.” In China, it took the lead in promoting on a large scale the “thoracic surgery day surgery model,” and the vast majority of patients meet the “five-no” standard—namely, no endotracheal intubation, no urinary catheter, no chest drainage tube, no infusion, and no oxygen—significantly reducing surgical trauma, improving postoperative quality of life, and promoting rapid recovery. At the same time, as one of the earliest units in the province to perform lung transplantation, the ward has a mature lung transplantation treatment team, has successfully saved a large number of patients with end-stage lung disease, and has a lung transplantation surgical success rate at an advanced level in China.
