Dermatology
The Department of Dermatology of Shandong Provincial Hospital was founded in 1925. As one of the hospital’s founding departments, it has undergone a century of inheritance and development, building a comprehensive system for the coordinated development of medical care, education, and research. It has a doctoral degree-granting program in dermatology and venereology, a postdoctoral workstation research group, and a base of the National Drug Clinical Trial Institution. As a national standardized residency training base, it also undertakes the development of a key clinical specialty in Shandong Province and serves as the leading institution of the Shandong Provincial Dermatology Quality Control Group for standardized residency training, as well as the chairing institution of the Dermatology and Venereology Branch of the Shandong Medical Association, among other roles.
The department comprises three major clinical units: the outpatient department and inpatient ward of the Central Hospital Campus, and the outpatient department of the Olympic Sports Center Campus. It currently has 15 beds in operation and receives approximately 300,000 outpatient visits and more than 1,000 inpatients annually. The outpatient department has established a specialized disease diagnosis and treatment system for acne, hair disorders, vitiligo, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis/eczema, urticaria, and other conditions. It is supported by six major functional platforms: the dermatology/venereology treatment room, dermatologic surgery treatment room, laser cosmetology treatment room, hair treatment room, dermatopathology room, and dermatological imaging room. The inpatient ward focuses on treating difficult and critical cases such as severe drug eruptions, autoimmune bullous diseases, and connective tissue diseases. It is committed to developing a treatment system for acute and critical illnesses and a multidisciplinary collaborative diagnosis and treatment model, and undertakes the functions of a regional critical illness emergency treatment center and a referral platform for difficult cases.
Since 1932, the department has shouldered the mission of medical education. As an important pillar of the Qilu medical education system, it has successively undertaken core teaching functions for Shandong Provincial Medical Vocational School (1932), Shandong Provincial Medical College (1948), Shandong Medical College (1952), the School of Medicine of Shandong University (2000), and Shandong First Medical University (2019). Now, as one of the first national standardized residency training bases, it has established an integrated clinical medical talent training system spanning “undergraduate-master’s-doctoral” education, and has received such teaching honors as the national first-class undergraduate course “Dermatology and Cosmetology—What Medical Experts Say” (2020) and the Shandong Provincial Demonstration Grassroots Teaching Organization (2024).
Since 1975, under the leadership of Guo Ziying, the founder of the discipline, the Department of Dermatology took the lead in conducting systematic research on “cutaneous chromomycosis.” In 1978, it received the “National Science Conference in Medicine and Health Award,” and subsequently won the Second Prize for Scientific and Technological Achievements of the Ministry of Health, the Second Prize for Scientific and Technological Achievements of Shandong Province, and other awards, laying the foundation for the discipline’s scientific research. Successive academic leaders have upheld the philosophy of “strengthening clinical practice and emphasizing research,” followed the mainline of coordinated development in medical care, education, and research, continued to conduct in-depth work in cutting-edge fields such as severe skin diseases, psoriasis, infectious skin diseases, and skin aging, and promoted the deep integration of clinical and basic research. Over the past 3 years, the department has undertaken more than 10 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the China Postdoctoral Science Foundation, and the Natural Science Foundation of Shandong Province, among others. Its achievements have been published in internationally authoritative journals such as “PNAS,” “Advanced Science,” and “Cellular & Molecular Immunology.”
