Central Campus Ward 3

Shandong Provincial Hospital

The talent structure of Ward 3 of the Oncology Center of Shandong Provincial Hospital (Digestive Oncology Ward) is well established and highly capable. It currently has 16 clinical physicians and 16 nursing staff members, including 7 chief physicians, 4 deputy chief physicians, and 5 attending physicians, as well as 1 doctoral supervisor and 6 master's supervisors. In total, 7 team members have been recognized as provincial-level key talents, including Shandong Taishan Scholars Young Experts, Qilu Leading Health and Wellness Talents, and health and wellness talents under the Qilu Talent Project. The team has achieved fruitful results in scientific research and clinical practice. It has led 5 national-level projects and 13 provincial-level projects, and published more than 50 SCI papers. The team received the Third Prize of the New Technology Award of the Shandong Medical Association and, as core members, participated in completing 1 First Prize and 1 Second Prize of the Shandong Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award. It has contributed to 5 national-level diagnostic and treatment consensus documents, and multiple research achievements have been presented at top international academic conferences, including the Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).

Relying on strong talent and scientific research support, the department adheres to the development philosophy of “clinical practice as the foundation, research as the driver, and patients at the center.” It has established a distinctive diagnosis and treatment system centered on multidisciplinary collaboration, driven by cutting-edge clinical research, and supported by comprehensive supportive care throughout the entire course of treatment.

The department took the lead in establishing the Special Committee for Integrated Multidisciplinary Oncology Diagnosis and Treatment of the Shandong Provincial Hospital Association, and built a regular MDT consultation platform covering multiple disciplines, including gastroenterology, hepatobiliary surgery, thoracic surgery, radiotherapy, pathology, imaging, interventional therapy, and clinical nutrition. Several key physicians from the department serve as permanent core experts in the hospital’s MDT teams for gastric cancer, colorectal cancer, esophageal cancer, liver cancer, and pancreatic cancer. They have long worked closely with surgical specialty teams to provide patients with integrated MDT services throughout the entire process, from preoperative assessment, treatment-plan formulation, and intraoperative coordination to efficacy evaluation, postoperative follow-up, and adverse-reaction management. This effectively avoids the limitations of single-department decision-making and significantly improves the efficiency of coordination between medical and surgical treatment, as well as patients’ healthcare experience. In particular, since the gastrointestinal oncology MDT team involving department members began regular operation in 2016, it has focused on whole-course management and precision perioperative diagnosis and treatment for advanced gastrointestinal tumors. The related clinical research on neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy for rectal cancer was published in The Lancet Oncology (impact factor 35.9), reaching an internationally advanced level.

The department has consistently driven technological innovation through clinical research. It has undertaken more than 60 global and national multicenter GCP clinical trials, providing patients with digestive tumors at early, intermediate, and advanced stages with diversified and cutting-edge treatment options, enabling patients in Shandong Province to access the latest international antitumor drugs and treatment technologies without leaving the province. All clinical trial projects undergo dual approval by the National Medical Products Administration and the hospital’s Ethics Committee, are subject to standardized management throughout the entire process, and fully protect patients’ safety and legitimate rights and interests. At the same time, the subspecialty team actively conducts investigator-initiated trials (IIT), and multiple original research achievements have been presented at the ASCO Annual Meeting. Relying on standardized subject management and a rigorous data-traceability system, the team continuously optimizes individualized diagnosis and treatment strategies, promotes the rapid translation and implementation of cutting-edge research achievements, and improves patients’ clinical benefits.

The department attaches great importance to the development of oncology supportive care and palliative care systems. As the leading organization of the Palliative Care Special Committee of the Shandong Society of Gerontology and Geriatrics and the Shandong Pain Society, the team’s experts took the lead in drafting the Standards for Palliative Care Services in Shandong Province. This became the first provincial local standard for palliative care in China and provides a “Shandong model” for the standardized development of the industry nationwide. The team has formed a professional palliative care team composed of physicians, nurses, psychological counselors, clinical dietitians, and volunteers. It remains patient-centered and respects the dignity of life, seeking to maximize patients’ quality of life and comfort at the end of life while prolonging survival.
