Olympic Sports Center Campus Thoracic Surgery Ward 1 (Lung and Mediastinal Ward)
The First Ward of the Department of Thoracic Surgery, Olympic Sports Center Campus (Pulmonary · Mediastinal Ward), formerly known as the Thoracic Surgery Ward of the East Campus, was established in 2010, when the East Campus of Shandong Provincial Hospital was established. It is a designated unit of the Pulmonary Nodule Diagnosis Center of the Chinese Thoracic Surgery Lung Cancer Alliance, the institution affiliated with the incoming chair of the Thoracic Surgery Branch of the Shandong Medical Association, and the institution affiliated with the chair of the Thoracic Surgery Branch of the Shandong Physicians Association. It currently has 53 fixed beds and 15 doctors, including 7 chief physicians, 2 deputy chief physicians, and 6 attending and resident physicians, including 2 doctoral supervisors and 7 master’s supervisors. The annual outpatient volume exceeds 20,000 visits, the annual surgical volume exceeds 2,000 procedures, the annual volume of lung cancer operations exceeds 1,600 procedures, minimally invasive procedures account for approximately 95%, and Grade IV procedures account for approximately 99%.
The department is proficient in performing all types of thoracic surgery:
1.Minimally invasive procedures: 1) Diagnosis and treatment of small pulmonary nodules: The department uses the latest imaging technologies, such as three-dimensional reconstruction and 3D printing, together with cutting-edge approaches such as blood biomarkers, to comprehensively diagnose the nature of small nodules and provide a diagnostic basis for selecting the optimal treatment modality for each patient. It also uses three-dimensional reconstruction to precisely localize pulmonary nodules, enabling precise anatomical resection during surgery, thereby maximizing tumor removal while also maximizing preservation of normal lung tissue. 2) Minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer: Thoracoscopy and mediastinoscopy are used as means of diagnosing and staging lung cancer, providing reliable guidance for treatment; the department routinely performs thoracoscopic and da Vinci robot-assisted lobectomies and various precision pulmonary segmentectomies. 3) Video mediastinoscopy is used to diagnose difficult thoracic diseases, especially mediastinal diseases, including patients with superior vena cava syndrome; the number of reported cases and the difficulty of the operations rank among the highest nationwide. 4) Thoracic surgery under anesthesia without endotracheal intubation features less trauma, faster recovery, and a better patient experience.
2.Complex procedures such as extended resections for lung cancer and mediastinal tumors: The department was among the earliest in China and the first in the province to proficiently perform high-difficulty pulmonary surgical techniques, including superior vena cava resection and replacement, partial left atrial resection, and carinal, tracheal, pulmonary artery, and bronchial reconstruction. It has developed a distinctive approach to the surgical treatment of locally advanced central lung cancer, significantly improving the survival rate and quality of life of patients with locally advanced lung cancer. Surgical treatment of other giant thoracic tumors has also broken through traditional surgical contraindications and achieved good outcomes.
3.Standardized comprehensive treatment of lung cancer: Surgery is performed according to standardized protocols. In particular, systematic lymph node dissection not only makes resection more thorough, but also makes tumor staging more accurate and better guides precise comprehensive postoperative treatment. MDT is actively conducted so that patients with intermediate- and advanced-stage tumors can receive the optimal treatment modality. The department proposed the concept of overall surgical treatment and individualized treatment for locally advanced lung cancer and received the Science and Technology Progress Award of the Provincial Science and Technology Commission.
4.The department took the lead in establishing a Lung Tumor Diagnosis and Treatment Center, integrating surgery, oncology, respiratory medicine, imaging, pathology, and traditional Chinese medicine into one system. This provides the most standardized, streamlined, and economical integrated full-course management of lung tumors, thereby achieving standardized diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary nodules and lung cancer and aligning with national efforts in the diagnosis and treatment of major diseases and in lung cancer screening, early diagnosis, and early treatment.
Building on its existing scientific research achievements and the advantages of its disciplinary platform, the First Ward of the Department of Thoracic Surgery, Olympic Sports Center Campus (Pulmonary · Mediastinal Ward), has vigorously conducted basic and clinical research on lung cancer. In recent years, it has actively led and participated in more than 10 clinical studies in China and abroad, including national multicenter studies such as the RAVAR study and the LOFTY study.
All medical and nursing personnel of the First Ward of the Department of Thoracic Surgery, Olympic Sports Center Campus (Pulmonary · Mediastinal Ward), will uphold the spirit of “Unity, Dedication, Pragmatism, and Enterprising” and remain patient-centered, continuously improving their medical technology and comprehensive service capabilities and striving to provide the wider patient population with higher-quality, more efficient, and more precise diagnosis and treatment services.
