Central Campus Pediatric Comprehensive Respiratory Ward
The pediatric respiratory group of Shandong Provincial Hospital began in 1978; its comprehensive pediatric respiratory department was established in 2010. It chairs Shandong Medical Association and Medical Doctor Association pediatric respiratory and pediatric allergy groups and the provincial pediatric respiratory physicians' alliance. It reports 30 medical and nursing staff, three doctoral and five master's supervisors. The department treats common and complex critical respiratory diseases including severe pneumonia, severe refractory asthma, interstitial lung disease, pulmonary embolism, chylothorax, congenital bronchopulmonary developmental anomalies, airway and pulmonary vascular tumors, pulmonary sequestration, cardiopulmonary vascular anomalies, bronchiectasis and hemoptysis. Rare diseases include pulmonary alveolar proteinosis, cystic fibrosis, primary ciliary dyskinesia, congenital immunodeficiencies such as chronic granulomatous disease and other monogenic respiratory disorders. It also handles prolonged unexplained fever and Epstein–Barr virus-associated conditions. The hospital describes its expertise as nationally leading. Facilities include pediatric bronchoscopy, lung function and respiratory sleep monitoring rooms. It reports early provincial use of grade III and IV bronchoscopic examinations and interventions under general or local anesthesia: bronchoalveolar lavage, brushing and mucosal biopsy, removal of deep bronchial foreign bodies, airway clearance in critically ill children, balloon airway dilation, bronchoscopic thermal ablation, cryoresection and transbronchial lung biopsy, and bronchoscopy in newborns and infants under three months. Testing includes routine ventilation and infant tidal-breathing lung function, bronchodilator and bronchial provocation tests, continuous impulse oscillometry for airway resistance, pulmonary diffusion, exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO, FnNO and CaNO), allergen-specific IgE and skin-prick tests. Care includes sublingual and subcutaneous specific immunotherapy, targeted therapy for allergic asthma, chronic respiratory rehabilitation and nasal high-flow oxygen. With other hospital services it performs ultrasound- or CT-guided percutaneous lung biopsy, bronchial artery embolization, ultrasound-guided placement and drainage for pleural effusion, and monitoring of pediatric sleep-disordered breathing. The department reports provincial science and technology second- and third-class and health department medical science awards, more than ten national natural science and provincial projects, nine edited books including Practical Pediatric Pulmonology, over 300 papers including over 40 SCI papers, and contributions to more than 50 national pediatric respiratory guidelines, consensus statements and industry standards. Multidisciplinary clinics address unexplained fever, allergic disease, respiratory sleep and small pulmonary nodules in children; specialty clinics cover pediatric asthma/allergy and chronic cough. It hosts continuing education including the Children's Easy Breathing Summit and national course on advances in pediatric respiratory diseases.
