Bone Tumor Department
The Department of Bone Oncology currently has 27 beds and 9 physicians, including 2 chief physicians, 2 associate chief physicians, 3 attending physicians and 2 resident physicians, all of whom hold doctoral degrees. A specialised bone oncology group was established as early as the 1990s. The department focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of bone and soft tissue tumours, bone metastases and haematological malignancies. It routinely adopts a diagnostic approach that combines clinical, imaging and pathological findings, and holds regular multidisciplinary discussions. It performs limb-salvage surgery for various malignant tumours, hemipelvectomy with artificial hemipelvis replacement for pelvic tumours, vertebral tumour resection and reconstruction, and subtotal resection of sacral tumours. The department has distinctive experience in the comprehensive treatment of osteosarcoma, the surgical treatment of sacral tumours, limb salvage for malignant tumours of the extremities, and surgery for spinal and pelvic tumours. It has introduced new techniques such as vascularised fibular flap grafting for avascular necrosis of the femoral head and knee-preserving limb salvage with preservation of the epiphysis. In recent years, satisfactory results have been achieved in reconstruction after resection of tumours of the extremities and pelvis and in devitalised tumour bone reimplantation. In 2016 the department completed Shandong Province's first resection of a malignant pelvic tumour with 3D-printed hemipelvis prosthesis replacement, and its technical level enjoys a high reputation nationwide.
The department has established a comprehensive soft tissue and bone tumour database, has completed and is currently conducting a number of national and provincial/ministerial research projects, and publishes several papers each year, including SCI-indexed articles. It has several master's supervisors and postdoctoral co-supervisors and undertakes teaching tasks for Shandong First Medical University. International exchanges and academic visits are carried out throughout the year.
