The Orthopedics Department of the Provincial Hospital Affiliated to Shandong First Medical University was the first in China to implement professional divisions in the 1990s, including spinal group, joint group, bone tumor and other professional groups, and the spine specialty has developed rapidly. In 2004, Director Zhang Zuolun took the lead in establishing the Spine Surgery Department, and the development of Spine Surgery entered the fast lane. After nearly 30 years of accumulation, it has developed into a brand discipline that integrates clinical, scientific research, teaching and talent training, and has become a trusted choice for countless patients with spinal diseases to regain health.

The department has built a medical team with a reasonable structure and strong strength. There are currently more than 70 medical professionals in three wards across the Olympic Sports Campus and the Central Campus, forming a scientific echelon of "expert leadership, backbones, and youth endeavors":

The medical team has a total of 30 people: including 7 chief physicians, 10 deputy chief physicians, 2 associate researchers, 9 attending physicians, and 4 resident physicians, including 1 doctoral supervisor and 18 master's supervisors, and many experts hold important positions in provincial academic groups;

As the leading spinal surgery diagnosis and treatment center in the province, the department has both hardware and software capabilities:

1. It has 102 open beds, an annual outpatient volume of 90,000, and an annual operation volume of more than 400. Its service capabilities rank among the top in the province, and it has accumulated rich clinical experience;

2. Spine surgery specializes in common and difficult diseases, specializes in spinal orthopedics, standardized treatment of cervical spondylosis, lumbar disc herniation, thoracolumbar spinal stenosis, spinal deformity, upper cervical spine lesions, spinal tumors and other diseases, and provides patients with "one-stop" diagnosis and treatment solutions, especially in complex and difficult surgeries such as scoliosis, kyphosis correction, minimally invasive surgery under the microscope, and UBE, which ranks among the best in the country.

3. Technical Features: Minimally invasive guidance to overcome difficulties in diagnosis and treatment

The department leads the development of the discipline with technological innovation, and has built four distinctive technology systems: minimally invasive and precise, difficult breakthroughs, deformity and orthopedics, and digital orthopedics, covering various common spinal diseases and difficult and critical illnesses, and providing patients with full-cycle high-level diagnosis and treatment services.

1. Spinal microscopy and minimally invasive surgery: With minimally invasive, precise, and rapid recovery as the core, a minimally invasive technology system with spine microscope, minimally invasive channel, and spinal endoscopy as the main body is constructed to achieve minimally invasive treatment of various spinal diseases such as cervical spine, thoracic spine, and lumbar spine.

2. Highly difficult and complex spinal orthopedic surgeries: We focus on overcoming high-risk and complex spinal surgeries, and routinely perform complex and high-risk surgeries such as decompression of thoracic spinal canal stenosis, ossification resection of the posterior longitudinal ligament of the thoracic spine, resection of the ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament of the cervical spine, reduction and fixation of upper cervical spine dislocation, etc. Our technical level is leading in the province, and has brought good news to a large number of severe and difficult patients who seek medical treatment.

3. Osteotomy and orthopedic surgery for spinal deformity. Undertaken 4 National Natural Science Foundation projects and dozens of provincial and ministerial level projects, and won 3 second prizes and 6 third prizes of the Shandong Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award. 2. Published more than 200 papers in core journals at home and abroad, of which more than 90 were included in SCI, edited 2 monographs, and participated in the editing of more than 10 books, with extensive academic influence;

As the chairing unit of six provincial academic groups, including the Spine Microsurgery Physician Branch of the Shandong Medical Association and the Spine Group of the Orthopedic Branch of the Shandong Medical Association, it continues to lead the academic direction of spine surgery in the province and build a high-level communication platform.
