Otolaryngology
Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine
The Department of Otorhinolaryngology at Ruijin Hospital was established more than 90 years ago and has now developed into a department renowned for the diagnosis and treatment of head and neck tumors, with all subspecialties represented and distinctive features. It has 24 physicians, including 10 with senior professional titles and 5 supervisors for doctoral and master’s students; 10 hold doctoral degrees and 12 hold master’s degrees. It has more than 60 available beds, performs more than 6,000 operations of various types each year, and records more than 130,000 outpatient and emergency visits annually. Building on its traditional strengths in snoring-disorder surgery, rhinologic–orbital surgery, and otologic surgery, among others, the department has in recent years introduced numerous new techniques in the field of head and neck tumors, such as transoral minimally invasive surgery for early-stage malignant tumors of the pharynx and larynx, planned comprehensive treatment with larynx-preserving radical surgery for advanced laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancers, endoscopic transnasal salvage resection of recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and nerve-function-preserving resection of cervical nerve sheath tumors, among others. The types of tumors it diagnoses and treats cover all categories of head and neck tumors, and the number of laryngeal cancer operations consistently ranks among the top three in Shanghai. It has supervised dozens of graduate students, many of whom have received funding from the Shanghai Talent Fund. It has undertaken numerous scientific research projects, including major research programs of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and has published dozens of SCI papers.
