The Department of Neurology of Ruijin Hospital, Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, was established in March 1963; its founder was Professor Xu Delong, a renowned Chinese neurologist who once provided medical care for the first generation of senior central leaders; the former department director was Professor Chen Shengdi, a renowned Chinese neurologist; and the current department director is Professor Liu Jun. In the 2022 Fudan edition of the Neurology Specialty Rankings, the discipline ranked eighth nationwide. The discipline has subspecialties in movement disorders, cognitive disorders, neuroimmunology and complex and difficult diseases, epilepsy, sleep disorders, cerebrovascular diseases, neuroelectrophysiology, neuromuscular disorders, and pathology. It is a National Key (Cultivation) Discipline of the Ministry of Education, a key construction discipline under Phase III of the Ministry of Education’s “211” project during the 11th Five-Year Plan, a National Clinical Key Specialty of the National Health Commission, a key discipline of Shanghai Municipality, and a key discipline of the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission; it is also a National Clinical Specialist Physician Training Base of the National Health Commission, a National SFDA Clinical Pharmacology Base, and a Shanghai Standardized Training Base for Resident Physicians and Specialist Physicians. It has been selected among the top 10 of the National Reputable Key Specialty Rankings for nearly 10 consecutive years. The discipline has strong basic and clinical research capabilities and a well-trained young and middle-aged research team, and has received a total of 26 first-, second-, and third-prize awards from national, Ministry of Education, Chinese Medical, Shanghai Municipal, and Shanghai Medical award programs. In recent years, it has led or participated in 44 projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology, including “973”, “863”, the “Major Project for New Drug Development”, the “2030 Major Special Project”, the Support Program, and key and general projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
