Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine
Since Ruijin Hospital was the first in the country to establish a pediatric surgery department in 1954, the department has developed for more than 60 years. With the careful guidance and assistance of China’s older generation of renowned experts and professors, and through the efforts of several generations of department directors and all medical and nursing staff, the Department of Pediatric Surgery of Ruijin Hospital, drawing on Ruijin Hospital’s strong overall capabilities, has developed into two campuses: Ruijin Main Hospital and Ruijin North Hospital. The Department of Pediatric Surgery includes subspecialties such as pediatric general surgery, pediatric orthopedics, pediatric urology, and pediatric hand surgery. Diagnosis and treatment of common pediatric surgical conditions: Non-surgical treatment of congenital umbilical granuloma (carried out for decades, with tens of thousands of cases treated and a 100% cure rate); manual reduction with non-surgical treatment and surgical treatment of pediatric fractures (carried out for decades, with tens of thousands of cases treated and a 100% cure rate); buried penis, congenital penoscrotal fusion, phimosis, and preputial adhesions (various minimally invasive urological surgeries carried out for decades, with tens of thousands of cases treated and a 100% cure rate). Laparoscopic treatment of indirect inguinal hernia and appendicitis (carried out for 3 years, with hundreds of cases treated and a 100% cure rate) Laparoscopic treatment of Meckel’s diverticulum and other pediatric general surgical diseases (carried out for 3 years, with hundreds of cases treated and a 100% cure rate) The department has distinctive expertise in pediatric disorders of sexual development, non-surgical treatment of scoliosis, pediatric polydactyly and syndactyly, amniotic bands, correction of complex congenital limb deformities, brachial plexus injuries (birth palsy), treatment of nerve and tendon injuries, and treatment of pancreatic tumors using robotic surgical assistance systems, among other areas, and has extensive clinical experience in diagnosis and treatment. Among these, the da Vinci robotic-assisted surgical operating system is nationally leading in the treatment of pancreatic tumors. Currently, the department has 12 doctors, including 1 chief physician, 2 associate chief physicians, 4 attending physicians, and 5 resident physicians; more than 90% of the doctors have master’s or doctoral degrees, and approximately 70% have studied and pursued advanced training in the UK, France, the US, Japan, and other countries, forming an “enterprising, united, outstanding” physician team. The department has obtained multiple research projects from Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission, the Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China on pediatric disorders of sexual development and other topics; it has successively trained a large number of professional key personnel and published hundreds of papers in SCI-indexed and Chinese core journals.
