Urology
Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine
The Department of Urology of Ruijin Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (Shanghai Ruijin Hospital) was established in 1949 and is one of the earliest urology departments established in China. It is a key discipline under the “211” Project of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and has repeatedly appeared in the Fudan Hospital Specialty (Urology) rankings. Since February 2017, Ruijin Hospital has brought in Professor Xu Danfeng, a leading domestic expert in minimally invasive surgery and urologic oncology, to serve as the academic leader of the urology discipline, leading the department to a new level. The Department of Urology of Ruijin Hospital has a kidney transplant center, a urodynamics laboratory, and an extracorporeal shock-wave room; it is equipped with the world’s most advanced Da Vinci robotic surgical system, the latest domestically produced “Toumai” robotic surgical system, 3D laparoscopy, 4K laparoscopy, a 180w green laser, a Moses laser, a 2um laser, a 100w holmium laser, ureteroscopes (flexible scopes), percutaneous nephroscopes, and other equipment; it records nearly 120,000 outpatient visits and performs more than 3,000 operations annually. The main medical specialties of Ruijin Urology are: I. Adrenal surgery: Since performing China’s first adrenal surgery for primary aldosteronism in 1957, adrenal surgery has become a highlight of the Department of Urology of Ruijin Hospital, with experience performing more than 700 adrenal surgeries each year. II. Minimally invasive surgery for urinary tract tumors: As a pioneer in minimally invasive urology, the Department of Urology of Ruijin Hospital has always been at the forefront of the development of minimally invasive technology in China. Today, the minimally invasive surgery rate in Ruijin Urology exceeds 99%, and various minimally invasive procedures, including robot-assisted laparoscopy, conventional laparoscopy, and transurethral endoscopy, are used to treat tumors such as renal cancer, bladder cancer, and prostate cancer. III. Kidney transplantation: In 1969, Ruijin Hospital performed its first allogeneic kidney transplant, making Ruijin one of the first institutions in New China to perform kidney transplantation. Kidney transplantation at Ruijin has distinctive experience in renal-function protection, transplant immunology, and individualized treatment with immunosuppressants. IV. Urinary tract stones: The department has lasers with multiple power levels, develops individualized treatment plans tailored to each stone patient, and operates a specialized stone clinic to formulate follow-up plans for patients. V. Surgery for benign prostatic hyperplasia: The department has Shanghai’s earliest 180w green-laser surgical system to be formally applied clinically and routinely performs transurethral prostate surgery using a high-power green laser. It was among the first units in Shanghai to formally apply spiral prostatic metal stents and ureteral metal stents, providing treatment options for elderly and high-risk patients who cannot tolerate traditional urethral surgery. VI. Individualized treatment of urinary tract tumors: Our department, together with the Departments of Radiation Oncology, Oncology, Pathology, Radiology, and others, has implemented a multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment model (MDT) for urinary tract tumors and further provides patients with the best treatment plans suited to their individual circumstances, enabling them to benefit further from internationally advanced integrated medical resources and truly achieving precision medicine and individualized treatment.
