Respiratory Medicine Department
Renji Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine
Renji Hospital’s Department of Respiratory Medicine was established in 1954 and is, among other things, a doctoral degree-granting program, an outstanding institution in the national PCCM standardized-development program for tertiary hospitals, one of Shanghai’s first respiratory specialist physician training institutions, and the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Center for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Chronic Airway Diseases. The Department of Respiratory Medicine has established units at Renji South Hospital, Renji East Hospital, and Renji West Hospital; it currently has, among others, a Bronchoscopy Diagnosis and Treatment Center, an Interstitial Lung Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center, and a Pulmonary Physiology Diagnostic Center, with clinical work covering every area of respiratory disease. At present, the South Hospital branch of the Department of Respiratory Medicine has 45 inpatient beds and 23 doctors, including 10 with senior professional titles and 10 with intermediate professional titles; its clinical work covers Renji South, East, and West Hospitals and all medical consortium institutions. It sees approximately 150,000 outpatients annually and performs approximately 1,200 respiratory endoscopic diagnostic and therapeutic procedures; its overall medical diagnostic and treatment capabilities, disciplinary talent development, and academic standards are at an advanced level nationally. Over the past five years, department members have led multiple national- or Shanghai-level research projects each year and have held positions in the Respiratory Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, the Interstitial Lung Disease Group of the European Respiratory Society, the American College of Chest Physicians, and various subspecialty groups of the Respiratory Branch of the Shanghai Medical Association. As a core department of internal medicine, the Department of Respiratory Medicine has distinguished achievements in interstitial lung disease, lung cancer, and interventional endoscopic diagnosis and treatment, and participates in multiple international multicenter clinical studies of new antifibrotic drugs. The Bronchoscopy Diagnosis and Treatment Center is fully equipped and can perform a variety of grade III and IV bronchoscopic procedures, such as EBUS-TBNA, TBLC, small-probe procedures, high-frequency electrocautery, balloon dilation, and stent placement. In the fight against the COVID-19 epidemic, the Department of Respiratory Medicine, as a “main force” department, undertook a large amount of outpatient screening, diagnosis, and treatment work and dispatched many medical personnel to support epidemic control in other provinces, demonstrating the fearless spirit of the people of Renji Respiratory Medicine. During last year’s COVID-19 epidemic, the respiratory medical team was at the forefront of treating patients, undertook the treatment of COVID-19 patients in three wards, and greatly alleviated the pressure on the hospital’s emergency department. The respiratory specialty has approximately 10-15 standardized residency trainees each month; it also undertakes the teaching of theoretical, PBL, and CBL courses for the medical school’s undergraduate and eight-year programs, Ottawa Medical College, and others, as well as the compilation of teaching materials. Many doctors have received such honors as hospital-level Outstanding Teacher, Outstanding Residency Training Secretary, Teacher, and Director, the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Teaching and Educating Award, and the Shanghai Jiao Tong University President’s Award. The Department of Respiratory Medicine has long been committed to the diagnosis and treatment of difficult respiratory diseases and critical illnesses, has conducted systematic academic research on interstitial pneumonia, lung cancer, severe pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and other conditions, and has published important academic achievements.
