General Practice
Renji Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine
The General Practice Teaching Base of Renji Hospital was established in 2006 and is one of the first three clinical bases for standardized training of general practitioners in Shanghai. Since April 2019 the hospital has established the Department of General Practice independently; it currently has 11 physicians, including 5 with associate senior or higher professional titles. The department currently runs general practice wards on two campuses and operates multiple outpatient clinics, including the general practice clinic, the polypharmacy specialty clinic and the comprehensive chronic disease specialty clinic. It emphasizes the “patient-centered” and “biological-psychological-social” medical model and acts as a health gatekeeper. It solves patients' difficulties such as “not knowing which department to register with, unclear etiology, coexistence of multiple diseases and multiple medication use”, provides first-contact and hierarchical diagnosis and treatment for undifferentiated diseases of unclear etiology, and carries out comprehensive management of common and frequently occurring chronic diseases such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, osteoporosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, as well as various health consultations and medical care. The department also gives play to the resource advantages and leading role of a municipal tertiary Grade-A hospital, enabling high-quality medical resources to “sink down” and raising the level of primary care “up”, meeting the public's need for nearby medical care; it has jointly built a tight medical consortium with the Punan Branch, established a Department of General Practice at the Punan Branch, and, through the launch of “dual signing” and the “Shanghai General Practice Education and Training Center Network Base”, carried out school-hospital-local collaboration to improve the capacity of primary community health services, extending the reach of Renji's high-quality medical resources to the grassroots and meeting the multi-level medical and health service needs of community residents. In undergraduate, standardized residency, postgraduate and continuing education training work, the department's teaching team has received multiple grants including national-level and municipal-level first-class courses and post-graduation education projects, and has won awards in municipal competitions for simulated teaching, CBL, PBL and curriculum ideological-political design projects; members of the department have successively received support from the Pujiang Talent Program, the Shanghai University Teacher Training Program and the Shanghai Medical Garden New Star Program. The general practice community teaching base is located at three community health service centers in Pudong New Area — Weifang, Huamu and Tangqiao — among which the Weifang and Huamu community health service centers were awarded the first batch of Shanghai Demonstration Community Teaching Bases for Standardized Residency Training in 2021. Since its establishment, the base has trained more than 200 general practitioners, continuously supplying community medical institutions with batches of general practice talents who have a strong sense of social responsibility, solid skills, noble medical ethics and comprehensive qualities.
