Renji Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine

The Department of Radiology of Renji Hospital, affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, is a National Key Clinical Specialty, a Key Discipline of the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, a Key Discipline of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, one of the first standardized training bases for residents and specialist physicians in Shanghai, a doctoral degree-granting site of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and a postdoctoral research station. The department is distributed across Renji Hospital’s five campuses—East, West, South, North, and Hangzhou Bay—and its medical services reach the Yangtze River Delta. The department is equipped with top-tier large-scale medical and research equipment, including hybrid operating rooms, multiple high-end 3.0T MR systems, wide-detector spectral CT systems, DSA machines, and a small-animal 7.0 T MR system. Through the RIS-PACS system, the campuses are connected for remote diagnosis and treatment. Intelligent imaging diagnosis assistance systems and cutting-edge image post-processing software are also available, making routine imaging diagnosis more efficient and precise. The Department of Radiology provides specialized outpatient image-reading services, special-needs image-reading services, and examinations by designated experts, offering patients specialized, refined, and individualized imaging examinations and diagnoses. In recent years, the Department of Radiology of Renji Hospital has been committed to becoming a new type of radiology department led by teaching and research in molecular imaging, advanced functional cardiovascular and cerebrovascular imaging, medical imaging big-data platforms, tumor radiomics, and artificial intelligence imaging research. It has developed two major distinctive subspecialty areas: integrated cardiovascular and cerebrovascular imaging (mainly including cerebrovascular disease and brain functional imaging, cardiovascular MRI, and carotid artery wall MRI) and precision tumor imaging (mainly including a multimodal MRI system for brain tumors, spectral CT and functional MRI for lung tumors, high-resolution imaging and MR spectroscopy for urinary system tumors, precision imaging and preoperative localization of breast tumors, liver-specific contrast agents and free-breathing liver MRI in children, precision CT and MRI imaging diagnosis of digestive tract tumors, multimodal MRI evaluation of gynecological tumors, and imaging diagnosis and efficacy evaluation of malignant lymphoma). In addition, the department places particular emphasis on the clinical application and scientific research of infection- and inflammation-related imaging. Professor Zhou Yan, the current Director of the Department of Radiology, was elected in 2023 as the first Chair of the Infection and Inflammation Imaging Professional Committee of the Shanghai Association of Research Hospitals. Over the years, the department has undertaken 35 National Natural Science Foundation of China projects and more than 30 provincial- and ministerial-level projects. More than 600 articles have been published in various journals, of which more than 300 have been indexed by SCI(E)/EI. Multiple original articles have been published in leading international journals in related fields (Radiology, Stroke, ATVB, etc.). The department has received many honors, including the Second/Third Prize of the Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award, the Second Prize of the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award, the Third Prize of the Huaxia Medical Science and Technology Award, and the Second Prize of the Ministry of Education Science and Technology Progress Award. It has served as editor-in-chief of the monographs MRI Diagnosis of the Knee Joint, Rheumatologic Imaging, CT Diagnosis of Diffuse Lung Diseases, Atlas of Abdominal Imaging Anatomy, and Imaging Diagnosis and Clinical Application of Crohn’s Disease, among others, and has contributed to more than 30 books. It has obtained authorization for more than 10 domestic or international invention patents and software copyrights. The Department of Radiology currently has 3 doctoral supervisors and 5 master’s supervisors, and more than 90% of its physicians hold a master’s degree or higher. In addition to undertaking the teaching tasks for undergraduates, eight-year program students, and the Shanghai-Ottawa Joint Medical College of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, the department is also responsible for training graduate students, residents, specialist physicians, and visiting physicians, as well as continuing education programs in imaging medicine. It regularly holds the “Study Course on Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Imaging Techniques and New Developments,” the “Study Course on New Technologies, New Methods, and Clinical Applications in Neuroimaging,” and the “Study Course on Tumor Imaging Diagnosis and Application of New Technologies,” among others.
