Radiotherapy
Renji Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine
Renji Hospital's Department of Radiation Oncology was established in 2005 and has extensive experience in the radiotherapy and comprehensive treatment of various common malignant tumors. It has 53 approved beds and 104 open beds, making it one of the hospitals with a relatively large number of beds among Shanghai's tertiary Grade A general hospitals. The department has strong technical capabilities and routinely performs advanced radiotherapy techniques such as intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT), helical tomotherapy (TOMO), three-dimensional afterloading brachytherapy, stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), and online adaptive radiotherapy (ART), among others. It is the institution where the president of the second term of the Radiation Therapy Branch of the Shanghai Medical Doctor Association is based; it is a master's degree-granting program in Radiation Oncology at Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, a standardized residency training base for Radiation Oncology in Shanghai, and a standardized specialist physician training base for Radiation Oncology in Shanghai. It is also a participating institution in the joint advanced-study trainee program in Radiation Oncology of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, and every year accepts physicians and physicists from many hospitals across China for advanced training.
The department's leader is Administrative Director Ma Xiumei, a chief physician, Doctor of Medicine, senior visiting scholar at Duke University in the United States, and graduate student supervisor. Ma Xiumei has published more than 30 academic papers, led 8 projects of various types, including General Program projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), the Natural Science Foundation and Explorer Program of the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission, and Health and Family Planning Commission projects, among others, and led a total of 10 clinical studies. She currently serves as a member of the Intelligent Group and Hepatobiliary-Pancreatic Group of the Radiation Therapy Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, a member of the Specialized Committee on Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma and Brachytherapy of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association, a member of the Specialized Committee on Radiation Therapy of the Shanghai Medical Association, deputy chair of the Specialized Committee on Brain Metastases of the Shanghai Anti-Cancer Association, and secretary-general of the Radiation Therapy Branch of the Shanghai Medical Doctor Association. She specializes in the radiotherapy of malignant tumors such as lung cancer, esophageal cancer, liver cancer, cervical cancer, and prostate cancer; has a solid foundation in imaging diagnosis and can precisely delineate radiotherapy target volumes; and vigorously promotes technologies such as TOMO, SBRT, and ART to address difficult and complex cases.
In clinical application, the department has treated more than 50,000 radiotherapy patients, covering 34 categories of tumors, including pediatric tumors, mainly breast cancer, lung cancer, esophageal cancer, rectal cancer, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, prostate cancer, liver cancer, cervical cancer, brain glioma, and other common malignant tumors. The number of radiotherapy patient visits treated ranks among the top 3 radiotherapy departments of comprehensive tertiary Grade A hospitals in Shanghai. The department is equipped with a total of 5 medical linear accelerators capable of performing IMRT, IGRT, SBRT, and ART (1 United Imaging CT-guided ring-gantry accelerator Halos, 1 Tomo Radixact, 1 Varian Edge, and 2 Varian ring-gantry accelerators Halcyon), 1 head stereotactic Gamma Knife, 1 three-dimensional brachytherapy afterloader, 1 large-bore 4D CT simulator, and 39 treatment planning system workstations; it has also built a customized intelligent integrated information platform for radiotherapy.
In terms of talent development and research, the department currently has 20 physicians and 7 physicists, including 15 people with doctoral degrees, 2 at the senior professional level, and 5 at the associate senior level; 22 radiotherapy technologists; and 2 full-time research personnel. The department has established multiple clinical subspecialties, including thoracic tumors, head and neck tumors, breast tumors, gastrointestinal tumors, genitourinary tumors, liver tumors, gynecologic tumors, and nervous system tumors. In recent years, the department has cumulatively obtained 13 NSFC projects, 8 provincial- and ministerial-level projects, and more than 30 Health and Family Planning Commission and in-hospital projects; participated in 3 National Key R&D Program projects, conducted 6 drug clinical trials and more than 20 ITT studies, and published more than 50 papers in total. The department led the development of China's first domestically produced integrated information platform for oncology radiotherapy and completed its clinical translation and application; the platform has passed the Level 6 evaluation of the National Electronic Medical Record system.
