The Department of Pharmacy of Renji Hospital is a comprehensive pharmaceutical department integrating pharmaceutical supply, pharmacy administration, clinical pharmacy services, teaching, and scientific research. It comprises the outpatient and emergency pharmacy, inpatient pharmacy, cadre healthcare pharmacy, pharmacy warehouse, Intravenous Drug Compounding Center, Clinical Pharmacy Center, Shanghai Jiao Tong University Marine Drug Integration and Innovation Center, and other departments, forming a development structure led by the Renji East Campus and supported by the West, South, and North Campuses. It currently has 186 pharmaceutical professionals, including 4 chief pharmacists/researchers and 11 associate chief pharmacists/associate researchers; 3 doctoral supervisors and 2 master’s supervisors; 13 personnel with doctoral degrees and 26 with master’s degrees. Personnel with a bachelor’s degree or above account for more than 80%, forming a talent echelon combining senior, middle-aged, and young professionals with a rational mix of senior, intermediate, and junior professional titles. On the basis of ensuring the supply and quality of medicines, the Department of Pharmacy adheres to “rational drug use” as its core and takes “enhancing clinical capabilities and innovating research systems” as its leverage, focusing on developing an innovative drug therapy management system “centered on evidence-based pharmacy and supported by distinctive clinical practice,” thereby achieving leapfrog development in discipline development. It has received the First Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress from the Ministry of Education (2022), the First Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress from the Ministry of Natural Resources (2023), the First Prize for Marine Science and Technology twice (2018, 2022), the Gold Award of the China Hospital Management Award (2022), and the Two-Star National Youth Civilization Unit designation (2023), and has supported its Party branch in being selected as a Benchmark Party Branch of Clinical Departments of National Public Hospitals (2023) and a Model Party Branch for Party Building in Public Hospitals of Shanghai Municipality (2022).
The Department of Pharmacy uses smart pharmacy technologies to advance the informatization of hospital pharmaceutical management and the automation of dispensing, continuously optimize pharmaceutical management and medication-use processes, and improve the quality and efficiency of pharmacists’ services. It has established a comprehensive network management system and undertakes the selection, procurement, acceptance, storage, maintenance, distribution, information maintenance, data uploading, and pharmacy administration of hospital medicines, achieving electronic tracking throughout the entire medication process; it is equipped with automatic medication dispensing machines, unit-dose packaging systems, pneumatic tube transport systems, intelligent management systems for narcotic, psychotropic, and toxic drugs, cold-chain monitoring systems, temperature and humidity monitoring systems, unattended medication pickup machines, and other equipment to strengthen intelligent management and ensure the accuracy of medication dispensing; it continuously optimizes the prospective prescription review system, implements prospective prescription review and real-time interception through information technology, and has established an independent medication consultation room to provide medication guidance and ensure patients’ medication safety; it strengthens pharmaceutical services in wards, strictly manages narcotic and psychotropic drugs, resuscitation carts, and backup medicines, and strengthens the development of operating-room pharmacies; it is equipped with horizontal laminar-flow workbenches, biological safety cabinets, and intravenous drug-compounding robots to conduct centralized compounding of hazardous drugs, parenteral nutrition medicines, and other intravenous medicines, ensuring medication safety while protecting medical and nursing personnel. The Department of Pharmacy has successfully passed the re-accreditation of “RTAC International Accreditation (Pharmacy Section).” In 2023, it undertook the dispensing of approximately 4.8 million outpatient and emergency prescriptions, as well as the supply, dispensing, and preparation of medicines for 220,000 inpatients.
The Department of Pharmacy remains at the forefront of rational clinical drug use, establishing an innovative drug therapy management system for major chronic diseases with clinical pharmacy as its core, developing a rational drug-use decision-making system based on an evidence-based medication evaluation system, and constructing a precision medication system employing the strategy of “precision testing—refined subtyping—targeted intervention,” thereby forming a development pattern in which eight subspecialties—antimicrobial therapy, anticoagulation, oncology, endocrinology, immunology, gynecology, surgery, and clinical pharmacology—advance in parallel. It actively participates in MDT multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment and conducts medication monitoring for critically ill and difficult-to-treat patients. At the same time, it expands the scope of pharmaceutical services through pharmacy clinics, community services, Internet-based pharmaceutical services, and other approaches. It pioneered the “research-oriented clinical pharmacist training model” (which received the Silver Award in the Discipline Management category of the 2021 China Hospital Management Award), encouraging outstanding talent to emerge: Jiao Weihua received the National Excellent Young Scientists Fund (2020), and Yang Fan was named a Young Scientist by the Ministry of Science and Technology (2022). In addition, 13 person-occurrences of clinical pharmacists received municipal-level talent programs, including the Shanghai Young Top Talent Program, Shanghai Science and Technology Rising Star Program, Pujiang Talent Program, and Yangfan Program. Director Lin Houwen received such honors as the Seventeenth Shanghai Science and Technology Elite Award (2022) and one of the Top Ten Medical Promotion Experts nationwide (2023). The Department of Pharmacy took the lead in establishing the first municipal-level “Shanghai Anticoagulation Pharmacist Alliance” in China and the first cross-regional “Yangtze River Delta Anticoagulation Pharmacist Alliance,” strongly promoting a regionally standardized drug therapy management model.
The Department of Pharmacy is among the first National Clinical Pharmacist Training Bases, the National Health Commission Training Base for Shortage Talents (Clinical Pharmacists), the Chinese Medical Association Clinical Pharmacist Training Base, and the Shanghai Clinical Pharmacist Training Base. It has trained more than 200 outstanding clinical pharmacists from provinces and municipalities throughout the country. At the same time, as a graduation internship base for Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Shanghai Health Medical College, and other institutions, and as the institution where the dean of the School of Clinical Pharmacy of the School of Medicine of Shanghai Jiao Tong University is based, it has long been committed to building a high-quality clinical pharmacy teaching platform and promoting the sharing of clinical pharmacy teaching resources in the Yangtze River Delta. In addition, targeting major diseases such as tumors, infections, and inflammation, the Department of Pharmacy focuses on the structures and functions of drug-source molecules from marine symbiotic organisms. It has established drug innovation research platforms for the discovery and structural modification, total synthesis and biosynthesis, microbial screening and fermentation, and pharmacological activity screening and target-mechanism research of marine drug-source molecules, comprehensively improving the efficiency of discovering new drug-source molecules, broadening their source pathways, and promoting the research, development, and translation of innovative marine drugs.
The Department of Pharmacy has achieved significant scientific and technological results in clinical drug therapy management and innovative drug research. Over the past decade, it has received 50 national-level projects in total, including 44 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China; it has led 3 projects under the National Key Research and Development Program and 1 National Science and Technology Major Project, with total funding exceeding RMB 80 million; it has published 226 SCI papers in international journals and obtained authorization for 25 national invention patents, including 2 international PCT patents and 1 United States patent; it has developed 3 candidate new drugs with independent intellectual property rights. The project “Preparation Methods and Uses of Butenoic Acid Lactone Compounds” achieved a scientific research transfer valued at RMB 10 million. The discipline’s competitiveness has ranked first in the pharmacy series of Shanghai’s public hospitals for consecutive years!
