The Department of Anesthesiology of Renji Hospital is a Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education for Anesthesiology, a Shanghai Municipal Key Clinical Specialty, the Shanghai Engineering Technology Research Center for Perioperative Organ Support and Function Protection, and a National Key Professional Base for Standardized Training of Anesthesia Residents, and it is currently the unit of the chairperson of the Anesthesiology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association. In the latest anesthesiology discipline ranking released by the Hospital Management Institute of Fudan University it ranks 4th nationwide and 1st in East China. The department currently has 8 doctoral supervisors and 6 master's supervisors. It has trained one chief scientist of a major research program of the Ministry of Science and Technology, one recipient of the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars and one young top-notch talent of the Ministry of Science and Technology, one of each. Successively, 7 members of the department have received the Rising Star Program of the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission. In 2023 the volume of anesthesia procedures exceeded 210,000 cases; the annual total surgical volume has ranked first in Shanghai for many consecutive years, and the anesthesia volume for grade III and IV major surgeries ranks among the top. Every year more than 600 adult and pediatric liver transplantations and more than 400 kidney transplantations are completed. As the world's largest transplantation center, it has led the formulation of and participated in the issuance of a number of clinical guidelines related to liver transplantation anesthesia. Day surgery accounts for more than 45%, ranking first in the country, and the Renji day-surgery anesthesia model has become a national standard. It undertakes the anesthesia and emergency care for more than half of the critically ill parturients in Shanghai and for all parturients with combined heart disease. The Department of Anesthesiology of Renji Hospital has always been the unit of the director of the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine of the School of Medicine of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The department has long undertaken the theoretical teaching, clinical observation and internship supervision of anesthesia students from the Department of Clinical Medicine of the School of Medicine of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and from sister institutions such as Xuzhou Medical University, Wenzhou Medical University, Wannan Medical College and Bengbu Medical College. It is one of the first batch of standardized training bases for anesthesia residents and training bases for anesthesia specialists in Shanghai, and since 2020 it has been rated as a National Key Professional Base for Standardized Training of Residents. The course Critical Care Medicine has been rated as a Shanghai Excellent Course; the all-English course Anesthesiology has been rated as a Shanghai municipal key course for higher education institutions and a university-level first-class undergraduate course of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The Department of Anesthesiology has long been devoted to basic and clinical research on the pathogenesis of chronic pain and on the protection of important organs such as the liver, brain and lungs in elderly patients during the perioperative period, and in the past 7 years it has obtained a total of 66 projects from the National Natural Science Foundation; in the past 5 years it has published more than 150 SCI papers in journals such as the Journal of Clinical Investigation, Cancer Communications, Cell Research, Science Translational Medicine and Nature Communications, including 21 Q1 papers with an impact factor above 10 points. In 2020 the research project “Establishment of a Guarantee System and Key Technologies for Improving the Quality of Perioperative Care of Patients with Liver Disease” won the First Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China.
