Neurology
Renji Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine
The Department of Neurology of Renji Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, was founded in 1952 by Professor Zhou Xiaoda, a renowned Chinese neurologist, and is one of the earliest large general hospitals in Shanghai and throughout China to establish a department of neurology; it is also widely recognized as one of the birthplaces of neurology in Shanghai and China. Beginning in the 1950s, it was among the earliest in China to conduct electroencephalography examinations and provide treatment for neurodegenerative diseases, nervous system infections, cerebrovascular diseases, and craniocerebral trauma. The Department of Neurology of Renji Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, comprises the East, West, and South campuses, as well as the Baoshan Branch, Ningbo Hangzhou Bay Branch, Jiading Branch, Pudong Punan Branch, Nantong Branch, and other medical alliance campuses; it has more than 300 beds in operation and is equipped with a stroke unit, a DSA operating room, cervicocerebral vascular ultrasonography, a neuroelectrophysiology room, a neuropsychology room, and a neuroscience laboratory, as well as an independent neurology emergency department and a green channel for stroke treatment. Each year, it treats large numbers of critically ill patients with stroke, encephalitis, myelitis, status epilepticus, and other critical and severe conditions; its annual outpatient and emergency visit volume is >250,000, ranking among the leading hospitals of the same level in Shanghai. The Department of Neurology is the founding institution of the Functional Neurological Disorders Diagnosis and Treatment Alliance, one of the first Shanghai Stroke Treatment Centers and China Stroke Alliance Stroke Centers, and the Shanghai Stroke Clinical Treatment Center; it is also among the first National Comprehensive Epilepsy Centers, National Sub-centers for Neuroimmunology and Infectious Diseases Research, National Standardized Diagnosis and Treatment Centers for Peripheral Neuropathies, National Clinical Pharmacology Bases, and National Standardized Residency Training Bases for Neurology. The discipline is subdivided into multiple subspecialty areas, covering movement disorders, cognitive disorders, cerebrovascular diseases, neuroimmunology, neurogenetics, functional neurological disorders and rare, difficult-to-diagnose diseases, epilepsy, sleep disorders, neuroelectrophysiology, neuromuscular diseases, and pathology. Relying on the discipline’s unique strengths, it is committed to developing an interdisciplinary integrated model; through close collaboration, it has established a multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment (MDT) outpatient clinic for functional neurological disorders, an MDT outpatient clinic for Parkinson’s disease and broad-spectrum movement disorders, and an MDT specialty outpatient clinic for cognitive disorders, while also adding a joint diagnosis and treatment outpatient clinic for neuralgia, a specialty outpatient clinic for obesity-related cognitive impairment, and a specialty outpatient clinic for hepatolenticular degeneration, with the aim of providing patients with comprehensive and precise medical care. The Department of Neurology of Renji Hospital will continue to promote comprehensive discipline development, with an emphasis on establishing a clinical diagnosis and treatment center for common and difficult neurological diseases; taking the development of subspecialties and important diseases as the driving force, leveraging the strengths of outstanding young and mid-career research physicians with specialized expertise and high ethical standards, and strengthening the development of clinical diagnosis and treatment centers, scientific research platforms, and talent teams, it will strive to ultimately build a domestically leading and internationally advanced clinical neuroscience diagnosis, treatment, and research center with a complete range of specialties, distinctive characteristics, a complete professional echelon, and balanced development of medical care, education, and research.
