Since its establishment in 1963 by Professors Pan Ruipeng and Ouyang Renrong, pioneers of hematology in China, Renji Hospital’s Department of Hematology has undergone more than half a century of consolidation and development and has become an important force in the diagnosis and treatment of hematologic diseases in China. Under the leadership of its current director, Professor Du Juan, the department has always remained at the forefront of academic development and is committed to providing precise and efficient medical services to patients with hematologic diseases. Renji Hospital’s Department of Hematology is currently the Shanghai Branch of the National Clinical Research Center for Hematologic System Diseases; the chairing institution of the Hematology Disease Rehabilitation Special Committee of the Chinese Association of Rehabilitation Medicine; a member institution of the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EMBT); the Shanghai Branch of the Chinese Marrow Donor Program and a hospital for hematopoietic stem-cell collection and transplantation; a member institution of the Shanghai Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Alliance; and a lymphoma science-popularization and education base of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association.
Medical Strength
Renji Hospital’s Department of Hematology has a strong medical team and advanced diagnostic and treatment facilities. The department’s team consists of 63 personnel, including 23 doctors, 2 full-time scientific researchers, 7 medical technical personnel, and 31 nurses, of whom 13 hold senior professional titles. The department has subspecialty groups for myeloma, lymphoma, leukemia, and the laboratory diagnosis of hematologic diseases, providing patients with comprehensive and specialized diagnostic and treatment services. In addition, the department has inpatient wards at the East Campus, South Campus, Punan Branch, and Hangzhou Bay Hospital, with 118 approved beds and 4 Class 100 sterile laminar-flow wards. It is also equipped with advanced laboratory facilities, including a blood-cell laboratory and a leukemia research laboratory, providing strong support for the precise diagnosis and treatment of disease. In 2023, the inpatient wards at the East and South campuses admitted nearly 7000 patients, and the annual outpatient volume exceeded 40000 visits. According to the 2023 Shanghai municipal hospital specialty and disease statistics, the number of discharges for myeloma and acute leukemia ranked third across the city, while lymphoma ranked fifth, fully demonstrating the department’s leading position in the field of hematologic diseases.
Medical Specialties
Renji Hospital’s Department of Hematology has accumulated extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of hematologic malignancies, including myeloma, lymphoma, and acute/chronic leukemia, as well as other common diseases of the hematologic system, such as various types of anemia, myelodysplastic syndromes, immune thrombocytopenia, myeloproliferative neoplasms, and bleeding and coagulation disorders. Since establishing its lymphoma diagnosis and treatment subspecialty group in 2010, the department has worked with a multidisciplinary collaborative diagnosis and treatment team (MDT) to provide full-process management for the standardized and individualized diagnosis and treatment of hematologic malignancies. It has now established laboratory testing in cytology, immunology, molecular biology, and other fields, and has developed precise diagnosis and prognostic stratification of patients with hematologic malignancies across multiple dimensions, including genes, proteins, cells, and organs. It has also introduced a range of advanced treatment technologies, including cancer chemotherapy, immune-targeted therapy, hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation, and novel cellular immunotherapies. Under the leadership of Professor Du Juan, the department has reached an internationally advanced level in the diagnosis and treatment of multiple myeloma. In addition, Renji Hospital’s Department of Hematology has participated in drafting and revising numerous international and national guidelines and expert consensuses on the diagnosis and treatment of hematologic malignancies, making a positive contribution to the development of hematologic disease diagnosis and treatment in China.
