Main Campus Bone and Joint Surgery Department (including Trauma Surgery)
The Department of Orthopedics of our hospital was established in 1985 and was one of the earliest independent orthopedic departments established in Qingdao. After more than 30 years of development, it has grown into one of the influential clinical orthopedic medical centers. Our Center for Bone, Joint and Sports Medicine operates under a center-based management model and is a provincial clinical key specialty in Shandong Province. Corresponding first-level departments have been established in the eastern and western campuses. The center headquarters currently has 177 fixed beds and 5 wards, including 2 orthopedic wards at the headquarters. It currently has 53 beds, 17 physicians, including 3 chief physicians, 5 deputy chief physicians, 2 physicians with doctoral degrees, and 5 with master’s degrees, as well as 21 nurses. It is equipped with advanced diagnostic and treatment equipment, including a C-arm X-ray machine, a Smith & Nephew arthroscopy system, and a Sofamor Danek discoscopy system.
The scope of diagnosis and treatment includes trauma, joint surgery, and hand and foot surgery. We were the first in the province to perform minimally invasive discectomy for lumbar disc herniation and have expanded its applications. We perform anterior cervical discectomy and Cage fusion for cervical disc herniation and posterior cervical foraminotomy for cervical spondylotic radiculopathy, achieving satisfactory results. With thoracoscopic assistance, we perform minimally invasive anterior surgery of the thoracic and lumbar spine. Lesion resection, decompression, bone grafting, and internal fixation are performed for thoracic spinal metastases, tuberculosis, disc herniation, and thoracic fractures, with satisfactory outcomes, reaching a domestically leading level. In recent years, minimally invasive percutaneous kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty have also been performed to treat osteoporotic spinal fractures and spinal tumors, with remarkable results. Joint surgery specializes in the treatment of various intra-articular diseases. A distinctive system has been developed for the diagnosis and treatment of hip and knee osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis of the femoral head, developmental dysplasia of the hip in adults, and sports injuries such as knee ligaments and menisci. Several thousand hip and knee joint replacement surgeries have been completed. In trauma surgery, internationally advanced principles of minimally invasive and biological fixation have been adopted at an early stage for fractures of the long bones of the extremities, effectively improving fracture-healing rates. In hand and foot surgery, the limb-salvage rate is relatively high in the treatment of severe limb-destructive injuries. Cosmetic corrective surgery is performed for hallux valgus and severe foot and ankle deformities.
For talent development, the department adopts an approach combining focused and comprehensive training. All physicians in the department have received comprehensive and standardized clinical training. Regular collaborative relationships have been established with orthopedic centers and scholars in the United States, Germany, Australia, and other countries. Academic leaders are regularly sent abroad for training and further study; to date, 5 people have received professional training at orthopedic centers in the above-mentioned countries.
The Department of Orthopedics has undertaken more than 10 provincial-, municipal-, and bureau-level scientific research projects, received 7 awards, and published more than 160 papers in core journals. It is the Department of Orthopedic Teaching and Research affiliated with the Medical College of Qingdao University and undertakes teaching for the Medical College of Qingdao University. It also provides clinical supervision for interns from Dalian, Nanjing Medical University, Weifang, and Tai’an medical colleges. Every year, it organizes municipal continuing-education programs in Qingdao and has trained numerous orthopedic physicians from primary-level hospitals who come for further study.
The department provides first-class services and is a Demonstration Ward for High-Quality Nursing Services in Shandong Province.
